Town Projects - Update

TOWN HALL & POLICE STATION

This summer the Town issued an RFQ for Consultant Services to develop a Civic Needs Assessment. Town Council selected Creech and Associates Architectural Design of Charleston, SC from a field of nine (9) respondents for this project.  The consulting firm is currently working with Town Staff on this project.

TENNIS & BASKETBALL COURT RE-DESIGN (Stith Park)Four firms responded to the Town's RFP for Stith Park Tennis & Basketball Court Re-design on September 16, 2011.  Thomas & Hutton Engineering was selected to perform the re-design work.

INTERSECTION TRAFFIC FLOW

In an effort to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow at the intersection of Station 22 1/2 and Middle Street, the S.C. Department of Transportation plans to test an All Way STOP at the intersection beginning in early January 2012.  Additionally, there are some minor lane reconfigurations expected to improve vehicular flow eastbound.  The SCDOT is currently constructing measurements of success for improvement of the intersection.

Stay tuned to the Town website for further information about the installation date of the STOP signs and ways that you can offer your feedback during the test period.

PROTECTED LAND MANAGEMENT PLAN

Council held a workshop on November 4, 2011 to discuss and edit a draft proposed Protected Land Management Plan.  The Real Estate Committee of Council held a meeting on November 18, 2011 to review these Council edits.

NEXT STEP:  Expect a status report from the Real Estate Committee on this document at the December 5, 2011 Council Workshop.

COMMUNITY COMMERCIAL OVERLAY DISTRICT

In September the Planning Commission recommended an ordinance to amend Section 21, Zoning, of Town Codes to establish a Community Commercial Overlay District (CCOD).

Ordinance 2011-6 (establishing the CCOD) passed First Reading, by Title Only, at the October Council meeting.

Council deferred Second Reading to its December meeting.
