Dear Residents and Friends of Sullivan's Island: 

The holiday season is upon us and 2009 is quickly drawing to a close.  However, Sullivan's Island remains a busy place in December.  The Ben Sawyer Bridge temporarily closes for span installation, Council meets to discuss Accreted Land Management and 2010 dog permits and business licenses are due January 1st at Town Hall.  In early December Islanders can herald in the holiday season at a traditional Fire Station Holiday Lighting Event and enjoy a street party during the bridge closure.     
 
We hope this edition of  E-Newsletters will help you stay informed of your Town's events and news during this hectic holiday month.

6:30PM  Special Meeting (rescheduled) for Council to discuss with Coastal Science & Engineering (CSE) proposed options for a management plan and to craft language for a management plan for the Accreted Land.
 
The public is cordially invited to this meeting.
 
**Public comments will taken for 30 minutes. The Town values all residents' comments.  So that everyone has an chance to speak, please limit your comments to no more than three (3) minutes.

Ben Sawyer Bridge Rehabilitation Project
BSB RenderingBridge Closure Update
(As of November 30, 2009 at 12:51PM)
 
The start date for the Ben Sawyer Boulevard (SC 703) closure of the Ben Sawyer Bridge is being shifted to Sunday, December 6, 2009 for 10 days (236 hours).  The exact time the bridge will be closed has not been determined.  
 
Please monitor the Town website and news media for the final announcement.  The Town will also send out Public Safety/Emergency Alerts through the Nixle service. 
 
Please give consideration and thought to alternate routes and traffic delays.  Mount Pleasant Police will route traffic to/from Sullivan's Island through the City of Isle of Palms and I-517 Isle of Palms  Connector and in Mount Pleasant over US Highway 17 or Hungryneck Boulevard.

ISLAND FUN EVENT - Sunday, December 6th
CELEBRATE THE NEW BRIDGE!

Enjoy Fun Island Events While the New Bridge is Being Built!

(near 2050 Middle Street)
 
Fun Starts around 1PM (race registration)
 
Highlights:  Fun Race (1:30PM), Live Music, Food, Crafts and More (Family friendly event)
Entertainment is free but some events require a $5 wristband purchase (proceeds benefit Park Foundation).  Wristbands can be purchased now at Town Hall (1610 Middle Street) or at the Fire Station (2050 Middle Street) on December 6th.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS!
 
Annual Holiday Park Lighting Event
 
5:30PM on Friday, December 4, 2009 
Sullivan's Island Fire Station (2050 Middle Street)
 
Join us for this family friendly event to kick-off the holiday season.
 
Highlights:  Holiday music by Wando High School Chorus, lighting of the fire station and park, snacks and beverages, and a "special" visitor for the young and young-at-heart.

Council ratified Ordinance 2009-8 extending Winter Season hours for dogs on the beach and modifying permit fees.
 
Dogs on Beach:  Winter Season Extended
October 1st - April 30th
 
Off-leash:  5AM-Noon
On-leash:   Noon-5AM 
 
Dog Permit Fees:
$ 25.00/dog (resident)
$ 35.00/dog (non-resident)
 
$2.00/permit discount available if proof of an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizenship Certificate is presented at time of permit purchase.
 
Remember all dogs need permits (residents & visitors) - 2010 permits are available Now!

Remember roll out garbage containers must be placed curbside by 7:00AM collection day and removed from the curb by 7:00PM on collection day.  Call Suburban Disposal at (843) 873-4810 if you need a container and/or have collection questions. 
 
    TOWN HALL OFFICE HOURS
Town Hall offices will be closed for the following holidays:

There will be no change in the garbage collection schedule these holiday weeks. Recycling will be collected on Wednesday, December 30, 2009.
 
Normal Town Hall office hours are 8:00am - 5:00pm, Monday-Friday.

Tips to Keep Your House & Identity Safe
 
Darkened houses, stuffed mailboxes, newspapers stacked on the driveway and lack of house traffic are tell-tale signs for thieves that nobody is home.
 
Don't let your house get robbed or your identity and good credit stolen while you are away on vacation!
 
Help your Police Department prevent crime this holiday season by taking some simple precautions: 
 
*   Make arrangements for your mail & newspapers
Remember, a stuffed mailbox is a good way for a thief to steal your identity. 
 
Call the Post Office (843-883-3461) and arrange to have your mail delivery temporarily suspended.
 
Call your local newspaper carriers to temporarily suspend newspaper delivery.

Have a trusted friend collect your mail and newspapers each day.
 
*   Register for the SI Police House Watch 
 
Call either the office at (843) 883-9636 or Dispatcher at (843) 883-3931 to sign up. 
 
Advise the Sullivan's Island Police Department of your travel schedule and any anticipated house guests during your absence.  Patrol officers will keep your house under police watch.
 
*   Notify your neighbors of your plans and any planned house guests during your absence. 
 
*  Put your house lights (interior and exterior) on a timer to give the appearance someone is home.
