MITT ROMNEY: ANOTHER NIXON?
I've heard it said that Al Gore invented the Internet and Obama killed Osama. The fantasies change, but the character flaw stays consistent. Blame others for your failures and claim credit for their successes. The Obama, Pelosi, Reid agenda has been exposed for what it is: intellectually and morally bankrupt. Nonetheless, the fifty-one percent who pay nothing for the privilege of being Americans make a powerful voting block. This will not be an easy fight in 2012. Americans deserve a clear, bright choice- whether to support the Obama agenda or not. I do not want a choice between Obama and Obama lite.
Watching the debates Tuesday evening, I heard Mitt Romney say that bailing out banks was good, while bailing out auto companies was bad. Romney care was the right thing to do. Moreover, MSNBC reports that:
Newly obtained White House records provide fresh details on how senior Obama administration officials used Mitt Romney's landmark health-care law in Massachusetts as a model for the new federal law, including recruiting some of Romney's own health care advisers and experts to help craft the act now derided by Republicans as "Obamacare."
As Governor of Massachusetts, he took "no position" on efforts to raise the rates on their Death Tax. Contrary to the image being perpetuated, he raised over a hundred different taxes and fees and generally made life more difficult for small businesses. Job growth was devastated by Romney's policies as governor."From 2001 to 2006, Massachusetts ranked 49th in the nation in job creation..."
This reminds me far too much of Richard Nixon, and putting another Nixon in the ring with the One Trick Pony is a recipe for disaster. Apart from the question of whether an "Obama lite" candidate can defeat Obama in 2012, the damage another Nixon could do if he were elected is frightening to consider. Recall that before he resigned, Nixon brought us the Clean Air, Clean Water, and the Endangered Species Acts. He created the Environmental Protection Agency. He took us off the gold standard which allowed the Fed to run amuck with the dollar. He sold out Tibet and South Viet Nam to communists. He replaced our WWII allies, the Chinese Nationalists with the Chinese Communists in a permanent seat with full veto power on the UN Security Council.
In my view, Mitt Romney is potentially that kind of guy. Are we exchanging one disaster for another? The latest poll numbers show an increasing number of Americans feel he isn't the man for the job. Comedian Jon Stewart recently observed that just a few years ago, "Romney was the antithesis of everything Republicans stand for." Yet far too many Republicans are still invested in supporting those who have "paid their dues" to the Party.
We must not repeat the disaster of 2008, perpetuated by the "it's-your-turn" establishment mentality. As Peter, Paul and Mary asked, "Oh when will they ever learn"?
Keep the faith,
Bob McConnell
