This year, we will start the process of restoring Foster Hall, our historic, but currently out of commission, ladies dorm. Foster Hall, erected in 1869 as a housing building for girls and teachers, also served as the dining hall. The building was damaged by fire in 1980 and has been closed for more than 20 years.
The repairs needed for the building include those for termite damage, wood rot, leaking roofs, water damage, asbestos, lead paint removal, masonry work, electrical rewiring, heating, air conditioning and ventilation system. The building will also be made more accessible for disabled persons.
The $700,000 grant for the restorations is part of a $14.25 million historic preservation grant by the Department of the Interior. This grant will be split among 20 historically black colleges and universities across the country. It was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In celebration of its restoration, I am asking individuals who were at Talladega during the days it was a functioning facility to give us their highlights and memories about the building and their Foster Hall stories during their days at Dega. We are planning a Talladega College magazine and this will be the feature. Please e-mail your stories, as well as photos, to Seddrick Hill, Director of Alumni Affairs at sthill@talladega.edu. |
