"News You can Use around Your Home". Terry Carman RME

If cottage-style rest and relaxation is on your list for August; hurray! There is nothing nicer than putting your feet up and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the lake. Private campgrounds and cabins are popular destinations to enjoy these dog days of summer.

Understanding how to avoid the potential hazards associated with these types of retreats makes for a safe summer vacation.

The Dog Days of Summer

By the way, dog days are the hottest, most sultry days of summer. A casual survey will usually find that many people believe the expression refers to the conspicuous laziness of dogs. The name actually comes from the ancient belief that Sirius - also called the Dog Star and is the brightest star in the Canis Major (Greater Dog) constellation - was responsible for the hot weather. You can spot the rascally canine as it ascends in the east, before dawn, on late summer mornings.

Cabins and Bunkies

Ontario is well populated with rustic cottages and bunkies that were built between the 1930's and 1960's that have withstood the tests of aging. They are usually rented out by the week to those who long for escape from today's hectic schedules.

The trick to enjoying these havens safely is to remember you are striving for a simpler time. These older cottages are often cobbled up electrically. They are not equipped to handle modern day electrical demands. You will often see an ancient fuse panel installed in the back of a kitchen cupboard with a couple of sub panels of various ages tacked on. They are almost always over-fused.

Keep the electricity usage to a minimum. There is no need to have much more than the fridge, the water pump, and a reading lamp on at any one time. Barbequing is always a better cottage choice than a stove; it helps save the electricity needed for the hot water tank .

Ungrounded receptacles create risk for your electronics

Another unexpected electrical inconvenience comes from ungrounded receptacles. They will not provide protection for your electronic equipment - especially on those ancient rural hydro grids.

The best advice is to resist bringing urban living with you to the cabin; leave your high tech stuff at home. Have your answering machine and your computer automatically respond to everyone. The world will just have to get by without you as you try to get by without your margarita mixer while soaking up these beautiful dog days of summer.

World Headquarters Fire

The Shock Doctors world headquarters experienced a near calamity last week when its natural gas barbecue continued to burn over night due to a leak at the point of connection. As the leak expanded, and the flames got bigger, it became hot enough to melt the plastic foot casters into liquid pools, causing the barbecue to topple over, burning much like the Olympic torch.
The efficient professionals from the Severn Township fire department arrived promptly and averted a larger fire.
A quick word to the wise... Fire Chief Dowell pointed out that the situation would not have been so minor if the barbecue had been on the deck or against the house.

Sadly, the barbecue fire was my addition to the newsletter this month...
I sheepishly report that I did not turn off the gas at the valve the evening before, and in my effort to not overreact to my BBQ fire, I even forgot that I do have a garden hose.
Yours for safe summertime fun,
