Strategic Biomass Solutions e-Newsletter
January 2012
Director's Cut

With the start of 2012, I want to welcome everyone to this first issue of the exclusive Strategic Biomass Solutions (SBS) monthly e-newsletter. As we say goodbye to our long-time e-newsletter partners at Taimerica Consulting Company, we look forward to bringing you news and unique perspectives from the world of renewable energy. SBS will continue to focus on facilitating the commercialization of renewable energy technologies by connecting entrepreneurs, investors and economic developers.

The SBS staff represents over a quarter century of combined experience in the renewable energy sector, and with proprietary tools such as the Renewable Energy Venture Development Academy (REVDA) we hope to reach across the southeastern United States and rest of the country to make a positive impact in this industry. SBS will continue to support relevant national and regional conferences that will allow us to provide discounted registrations for our readers, and will strive each month to present content that reflects our mission and values.

We are always open to new ideas and suggestions and ask that you let us know how we are doing. Finally, I request that you forward this newsletter to anyone who you feel can use this information and remember to follow SBS on Twitter via @sbs_renewable.  Enjoy!

Renewable Energy Markets:
2012 Forecast for PV Materials

Crystalline silicon will continue to dominate in 2012, for even if conversion efficiency for thin-film modules reaches 14 percent, it cannot compete with current prices for c-Si technology.  However, materials suppliers persist to engage with and look for ways to benefit from this large and potentially huge market.  Technologies that will likely see large-scale implementation in 2012 include pseudo-mono ingot growth, selective emitter technology, paste reduction techniques and increased market share of thin-film manufacturingClick here for more information.

Biofuels Become Victim of Own Success...
But Not for Long

For the first time in a decade biofuels production has dropped, going from a high in 2010 of 1.822 million barrels per day to 1.819 million barrels per day in 2011.  Click here for more information and to find out what this means for the "biofuels boom" and implications for global energy markets.
Venture Capital in Clean Energy
Are VCs Becoming Shy?

Venture capital investment in clean energy fell to $1.1 billion in the second quarter of 2011, down from $1.9 billion in the second quarter of 2010.  However, strides are still being made in the clean energy sector, especially in areas like solar power and energy efficiency.  Click here for more information.
Bioenergy Supporters From Around the South Meet

On December 8, 2011, the Southeast Agriculture and Forest Energy Resources (SAFER) Alliance and the 25x'25 Alliance invited leaders of Southern state and regional bioenergy organizations and networks to a meeting that focused on (1) exploring how to build a stronger bioenergy network, (2) sharing success stories and lessons learned, (3) learning about resources available to help build and sustain a bioenergy network and (4) collaborating with other Southern networks to promote and develop the bioenergy industry.

The meeting drew nearly 50 participants representing 10 Southern states.  The meeting outcomes included new collaborations between Southern bioenergy networks and national bioenergy trade associations, partnerships for public policy advancement and increased communications across all networks.  This is the first in a series of events to further influence the development of bioenergy solutions in the region.
