All It Takes Is One Always Be Prepared for Severe Storms
Storm season is officially upon the entire United States. Hurricane season starts up in June and lasts through November. However, tornado season varies depending on location. For instance, Wisconsin's generally runs from April through September.
An above-normal number of tornadoes are expected in 2012 following a near-record number of 1,700 in 2011. The 2012 hurricane forecast calls for 11 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.
What Forecasts Cannot Predict
Though forecasts are made, never assume that a severe storm will occur only during these "seasons."
Most of us remember the unseasonable January 2008 tornado outbreak that ripped through much of the South and Midwest, including Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin, demolishing thousands of homes and businesses.
In addition, hurricane forecasts cannot predict the details of landfall.
Severe storms are destructive, but a significant amount of damage could be reduced by being prepared, aware and taking safety precautions.
