Greetings!
Greetings from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System (MCFLS) !
eBooks and devices to read them have rapidly increased in popularity, particularly over this past year. This is a major development in the publishing industry and it will very likely have an equally major impact on library services.
To raise the level of discourse on the important issues encompassing eBooks and other e-content, the Wisconsin Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) convened an eBook Summit on May 4. State library organizations submitted nominations for summit participation to the state library division. I was one of 35 representives from all types of libraries that came together to discuss ways the wider library community in Wisconsin could become more effective in delivering this increasingly popular medium to our patrons.
On May 11, the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium (WPLC) created a special Digital Media Buying Committee with a charge to recommend a way to fund a statewide digital media buying pool for public libraries. Note: Digital Media can include eBooks as well as other downloadable media such as electronic audiobooks, video, and music.
The Digital Media Buying Committee report will be discussed at the next meeting of the WPLC on July 7. I will keep you informed of progress toward providing greater e-content to Wisconsin residents in future issues of the newsletter.
Have a safe and happy July 4th !
Sincerely,
Jim Gingery

OVERDRIVE EBOOK AND AUDIOBOOK APP NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE WINDOWS PHONE
|
| |

OverDrive has recently released the OverDrive Media Console for Windows Phone, which enables Windows Phone users to download EPUB eBooks and MP3 audiobooks. Now library eBooks and audiobooks will be available on popular smartphones such as LG Quantum, Samsung Focus, and HTC Trophy.
With this release, OverDrive now supports every major mobile and desktop operating system, including Windows, Mac, iPad/iPhone (iOS), Android, and BlackBerry.
Like OverDrive's apps for other mobile platforms, the Windows Phone app includes a "Get Books" feature so that you can easily find your library. You can then browse the mobile version of the Digital Download Center, check out an EPUB eBook or MP3 audiobook with a library card, and download the title directly to your device.
While the feature set remains the same, the OverDrive app takes advantage of the Windows Phone platform to provide a unique user experience.
The free OverDrive Media Console for Windows Phone app is available in the Windows Phone Marketplace and can be installed on all Windows Phone devices.
For more information on getting started with eBooks and Audiobooks, check out the OverDrive page located here.

NETLIBRARY EBOOKS MOVING TO EBSCOHOST
|
| |
Existing NetLibrary users will need to create new accounts by July 16th
EBSCO has purchased NetLibrary and is in the process of moving NetLibrary over to its EBSCOhost platform. As a result your current NetLibrary account information; checkout-download history; current checkouts, downloads and any notes that you have created will not be migrated to the new system, and will no longer be available to you.
If any of this account information is important to you, please make sure to save this information somewhere safe prior to July 16th, 2011.
If you have an existing My EBSCOhost account, you will be able to use this same account for eBooks on the EBSCOhost platform going forward. If you do not have a current My EBSCOhost account, you can create one within EBSCOhost using these instructions:
