Greetings!

Greetings from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System!

2010 Milwaukee County Teen Book Award (MCTBA) Winner and Honor Books Selected.

The Milwaukee County Teen Book Award (MCTBA) is a countywide initiative of the Young Adult Services Committee (YASC) of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System. The MCTBA promotes teen reading and literature by highlighting well written and popular books published for 6th-12th graders.  In its inaugural year (2010), the MCTBA committee nominated 15 high caliber titles that met a variety of qualifications.  The winners were then selected based on committee discussion and teen voting.

2010 MCTBA Committee Members :

Emily Alford, Youth Services Librarian, Greenfield Public Library
Katie Hubbard, Reference & Teen Services Librarian, West Allis Public Library
Megan Markiewicz, Reference & Teen Services Librarian, West Allis Public Library
Tiffany Wait, Teen Librarian, Shorewood Public Library

Wintergirls book jacket
1st place winner of the 2010 MCTBA is Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. Wintergirls is the story of 18-year-old Lia coming to terms with her best friend's death from anorexia as she struggles with the same disorder. Tiffany Wait describes the book as "a beautiful, haunting look into the struggle between anorexia and the will to live."

Three additional honor books were selected: If I Stay by Gayle Forman, Response by Paul Volponi, and the book that received the most teen votes, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.  For more information about the MCTBA, including reviews of the 15 nominsted books, award guidelines, and information about the MCTBA committee, please check out http://mctba.wordpress.com.

On behalf of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System, I wish to extend appreciation to the librarians of the Young Adult Services Committee / MCTBA Committee for their work in creating the 2010 Milwaukee County Teen Book Award and promoting teen literature.

Thank you for your continued support of libraries and the Milwaukee County Federated Library System.

Sincerely,

Jim Gingery
