Greetings!

Greetings from the Milwaukee County Federated Library System!

I am pleased to announce the recent addition of a
FOR TRUSTEES page to the MCFLS website (www.mcfls.org).
MCFLS public library board members (trustees) and other library advocates will find resources of value, incuding tools that can be used to support trustee training and trustee continuing education.

The Trustees page includes:

Primary Sources, e.g. Wisconsin Library Trustee Resource Page, Trustee Essentials ; Powers and Duties of the Public Library Board.

Law and Legislation, e.g. Wisconsin Library Law, Legislative Status Report (WLA) ; State Legislators serving Milwaukee County.

Library Trustee Organizations and Advocacy Groups, e.g.
Wisconsin Library Trustees and Friends (WLTF) ; Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends, and Foundations (ALTAFF).

Advocacy Tools, e.g. Report on the Economic Contribution of Public Libraries to the Economy of Wisconsin ; Federal Advocacy Resources.

I hope you will find "For Trustees" useful.

Thank you for your continued support of libraries and the Milwaukee County Federated Library System.

Sincerely,

Jim Gingery
Director

BROADBAND GRANT FOR WISCONSIN MEANS FIBER TO THE LIBRARIES

Fourteen MCFLS Member Libraries To Benefit

Fiber OpticsWe are happy to report that Wisconsin has been awarded a $22.9 million federal broadband grant that will bring fiber to 467 libraries and schools in the State of Wisconsin. All public libraries on BadgerNet will receive a minimum 20Mbps circuit for $100/month and library systems will get 100Mbps for $250/month. The project will include MCFLS' fourteen suburban member libraries. This will result in a 4 to 10-fold increase in internet bandwidth for participants. Note: Milwaukee Public Library already has its own fiber network and is therefore not part of this particular project.

Fiber installation will begin in April as soon as the frost is out of the ground. Most sites will be done by late November with installation to any remaining sites completed in Spring 2011. For more information, see an executive summary of the grant application entitled Building the Future : Wisconsin's Education and Library Broadband Infrastructure Project

Shorewood Public LibraryThe MCFLS Board Meeting on Monday, April 19th at 9:00 a.m. is scheduled to be held at Shorewood Public Library, 3920 N. Murray Avenue, Shorewood. It has been quite some time since a MCFLS Board Meeting has been held at a location other than the MCFLS Offices. MCFLS Board meetings are always open to the public and we encourage trustees from our member libraries to attend our meetings.
