Hard Boiled: The Classic American Detective
She Loves Me12-2 p.m. ∙  Friday, September  17 ∙ Corner Cooks, 505 Chestnut Street

The British have Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple. We Americans have Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe, Nick and Nora Charles. These are our "hard-boiled" American detectives - heavy-drinking, no-nonsense loners who are nevertheless honorable men with a soft spot for dames. Professor Cynthia Rutz will explore the code of this American brand of detective: this tough guy, good with a gun, whose "rude wit, disgust for sham, and contempt for pettiness" is so much a part of the American ideal.  Tickets are $25. Call (847) 441-0134.
Page to Stage: Love Conquered Despite Mistaken Identity
She Loves Me 3:30 p.m. ∙ Sunday, September  19 ∙ Winnetka Main Library

Mistaken identities are not uncommon in literature. The tensions resolved, be they happy or sad, are at the heart of great literature. In the case of love letters there is an added poignancy! Why is this resolution so important? How do great love letters and mistaken identities add to this increased tension and a desire for resolution?  Professor Ray Ciacci will examine the theme of love letters lost in conjunction with the Writers Theatre production of She Loves Me.  Registration is required; to register, call (847) 446-7220.
