FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NEW CRUISER
ON THE BLOCK: 1995 VULCAN 800
NAME: 1995 Vulcan 800
POSITIONING: Street-going "cruiser"
motorcycle
Joining
the cruiser crowd on the boulevard this year is the all-new Kawasaki Vulcan 800.
From
handlebar to taillight, the Vulcan 800's smooth, flowing lines are elemental,
unfettered by visual distractions. Right up front, the Vulcan 800 begins its
exercise in the classic look with a narrow front tire/wheel combination
contrasting with its wide, raked-out fork.
Moving past the massive V-twin
powerplant, a pair of sculpted, gleaming chrome mufflers catch the eye on the
right side of the machine. Underneath the flowing seat and rear fender, a
modern UNI-TRAK® single-shock suspension system is hidden, leaving an
ultra-clean look for a powerful impression.
And
when it comes to power, the Vulcan 800 combines the classic feel, acceleration,
and rumble of a V-twin without the draining vibration normally associated with
this design. The liquid-cooled engine's gear-driven counterbalancer and rubber
front engine mounts ensure a smooth ride. The side-mounted single carburetor
and air cleaner lend a bit of the custom look. Other modern technology abounds-
an accelerator pump on the carb and a microprocessor-controlled digital
ignition provide superior performance.
From
its gleaming mass of V-twin motor, understated, yet distinctive styling,
and chrome touches all around, the
1995 Vulcan 800 is bound for the boulevard.
VULCAN 800 TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS
ENGINE
Overall: The
Vulcan
800's 55-degree, SOHC, V-twin is an all-new design.
Valvetrain: A
single cam operates the four valves in each head, which have a valve included
angle of 40 degrees. With silent cam chains, the rear cam is driven off the
right side of the crank, the forward cam is driven off left end of the crank.
Valve adjustment is made simple by a sliding rocker arm arrangement which is
similar to that of the ZX-11.
Crankshaft: The
one-piece crank spins in a pair of plain bearings. Two-piece forged steel
connecting rods sit side-by-side on a common crank throw.
Flywheel effect is 50
percent greater than that of theVulcan 750.
Clutch/transmission/final
drive: The cable-actuated wet clutch has seven steel plates and eight
cork-based friction plates. Primary drive comes direct from the right side of
the crank to the clutch basket via gears. To decrease the torque load on the
clutch, the ratio of these gears is taller. Internal gear ratios are the same
as on theVulcan 750. A 530 O-ring chain is used for final drive.
Vibration-quelling
features: A gear-driven counterbalancer is used in conjunction with the
rubber front engine mounts.
Carburetor: A
single, side-draft, Keihin CVK 36mm carb with an accelerator pump takes care of
mixing chores.
Cooling: Liquid
and air cooling are utilized. The cylinder heads feature large cooling fins and
the aluminum cylinders have pressed-in iron wet liners.
Ignition: The
digital ignition uses a microprocessor to analyze crankshaft position and then
fire the spark plugs, of which there is only one per cylinder; this allows the
most efficient combustion chamber design.
CHASSIS/SUSPENSION
Frame: The
double cradle, single-backbone design features a right-side downtube which
unbolts for easy engine access.
Fork: The
long inner tubes of the Showa fork are 41mm in diameter for superior rigidity.
For the classic American look, fork width is set at 240mm.
Rear suspension: Tucked
cleanly out of sight, the single-shock UNI-TRAK® rear end features 7-way
cam-type preload adjustment.
