TEAM KAWASAKI'S MIKE KIEDROWSKI
NAILS DOWN THIRD STRAIGHT DAYTONA SUPERCROSS VICTORY
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 11, 1995) -- In a resounding performance,
Team Kawasaki rider Mike Kiedrowski
won the prestigious Daytona Supercross for the third straight time.
Teammate Mike LaRocco took the runner-up spot.
In
the quest for his fifth 250cc career Supercross victory, Kiedrowski, 26, of
Acton, Calif., started with a strong heat race performance. He blasted out of
the gate and led the race until the halfway point, then safely brought it to
the checkered flag in the runner-up position. He went in with a different
gameplan for the main. He says, "I had to look at the track a bit differently
and go out and charge like I did in the past couple years." When the gate
dropped for the final race of the day, push came to shove and Kiedrowski came
away with a good start. On lap five, Kiedrowski took the lead and, in his
words, "got the momentum going, established a good pace and made no mistakes"
on his way to victory. After an up and down season, he is fourth overall in the
series with nine rounds to go.
LaRocco,
now second in overall series points, dominated his heat race from the word go,
taking the lead in the first lap and stretching it out to 10 seconds before it
was all over. When he came out for the main event, this five-time Supercross
winner, who won the previous round of the series, ran in third for most of the
race. He had a bit of trouble passing the number two man but finally made a
clean getaway on lap 14 of 20.
Team
Splitfire/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Ryan Hughes, 22, of Escondido, Calif.,
normally a 125cc competitor, put himself in the number three position early in
his eight-lap 250cc heat race and followed Kiedrowski to the flag. A crash in
the main while running in third place took him out of the running.
Hughes'
teammate Mickael Pichon, 19, a French Supercross champion now riding in the
U.S. Supercross Series, had a great day at Daytona. First, in his heat race, he
rode to a strong second-place finish and came out swinging in the 125cc main
event. Soon after the gate dropped, Pichon took the number one spot and built
up a seven-second lead. Just two laps later, he picked up a string of course-marking
banners in his rear wheel and began slowing down. He was passed for the lead on
lap 12 of the 15-lap race. Soon after the pass, the leader also picked up plastic
course markings. But Pichon's third career Supercross victory was not to be, as
the leader wasn't slowed significantly by the debris. In the East Coast 125cc
Supercross series, Pichon sits just four points out of the lead.
Team
Kawasaki's Robbie Reynard, coming back from an injury sustained at the opening
round of the Supercross series, placed fifth overall in the 125cc class after
he, too, picked up course markings during the race.
