TEAM
MUZZY / KAWASAKI READY FOR BATTLE
IRVINE, Calif. (March, 1995) -- A leaner, meaner Team Muzzy/Kawasaki
squad is ready to assault the high banks of Daytona International Speedway, as
they kick off the 1995 U.S. Superbike Series.
Leading
the team is last year's winner, former World and U.S. Superbike Champion Scott
Russell. Recently, Russell ran the quickest lap times during Dunlop's annual
Daytona tire testing session, usually a prelude of things to come in March.
Right behind him was new teammate Anthony Gobert, the current Australian
Superbike Champion. Gobert is looking forward to his first run at the famed
Daytona 200, a race that always attracts an international field of competitors.
After
Daytona, Russell, the 1993 F.I.M. World Superbike Champion, will be joined by
Gobert in the 1995 World Superbike Series. Coming from a family of racers,
Gobert, 19, started his racing career on Kawasaki motocross machines and began
roadracing just two years ago, taking Australia's coveted Superbike crown in
his sophmore season. In Gobert's first ride on this new equipment, at the final
round of the F.I.M. World Superbike Series at Phillip Island, Australia, he
placed third in the first leg and won the final race of the year, beating the
best in the world.
In
addition to these world-class riders, the team's U.S. squad of Pascal Picotte
and Steve Crevier will compete in the premier roadracing classes, Superbike and
600 SuperSport, on the championship-winning NINJAŽ ZX-7R and all-new NINJA
ZX-6R.
Team
owner Rob Muzzy, who has tuned his way to countless national and world
championships, is optimistic about the new, tighter structure of the team. He
says, "Having just four riders and a limited number of machines to work on will
help us focus on the task at hand - winning Daytona." He went on to say,
"Unlike years past, we will be running the same Superbike equipment in the U.S.
as we do for the World Championship effort; this will surely step things up
quite a bit."
Canadian
Pascal Picotte, 24, of Granby, Quebec, won the Laguna Seca and Brainerd rounds
of the 1994 U.S. Superbike series and set new track records at both of these
venues. He placed 11th in last year's Daytona 200. After competing on
twin-cylinder machines, Picotte says that he is up to the challenges a
four-cylinder machine presents and is confident that he will be up to speed by
the time Daytona comes around. He is looking forward to learning a great deal
from Muzzy and following in the footsteps of other notable Kawasaki-mounted
Muzzy riders, including world champions Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey, as well
as Californian Doug Chandler.
After
placing sixth at the Daytona 200, sixth in the final 1994 U.S. Superbike Series
standings, and third in 600 SuperSport, Crevier, 29, also a Canadian, of Pitt
Meadows, B.C., is happy to be back for his second year with Team
Muzzy/Kawasaki. After an up-and-down year, he says, "The 1994 season was one of
development for me; 1995 will be one of winning."
With
this powerhouse quartet of riders, the new NINJAŽ ZX-6R and championship-winning NINJAŽ
ZX-7R, Team Muzzy/Kawasaki is looking to continue its winning ways in Daytona
and continue throughout U.S. and worldwide competition.
