Science at the Party Conferences

As party conference season continues, CaSE director Imran Khan has written an article in Research Fortnight, calling on the main parties to make science central to their economic and political strategy.

The piece, entitled 'It's time for the big three to get serious on science', scrutinises each party in turn and urges them to show a genuine interest in science research.

Labour
In his conference speech earlier today, Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls called for the 4G auction windfall to fund housing and stamp duty breaks. Although welcoming Labour's focus on the 4G spectrum auction, CaSE has suggested that the money could be put to better use by investing in a radical overhaul of the economy instead.

Liberal Democrats
At their party conference last week, the Liberal Democrats passed a policy motion urging the Government to increase investment in science and research across the UK. The passing of this motion follows the publication of the Liberal Democrats' new science policy paper and we've compiled selected highlights of the policy paper here.
Reshuffle repercussions for science?
Last month saw the first major re-shuffle of the Government and CaSE has looked at where this leaves the Coalition's policies on science and engineering.

Both Vince Cable and David Willetts have kept their jobs as Secretary of State and Universities and Science Minister respectively, which will be largely welcomed by scientists and engineers. However, there are bigger changes for the Government's skills agenda, with Liberal Democrat MP David Laws coming in as the new Schools Minister.
Foreign Office 'lacks clear science strategy'
A new report by the Government Office for Science has found that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) lacks a clear science and innovation strategy.

We welcome the GO Science report and urge the FCO to act on its recommendations, so as to properly embed scientific and engineering expertise and advice across the department.
