GCSE and A-Level Results
GCSEs
CaSE has welcomed another good year for science GCSEs, with physics, chemistry, and biology ('triple science') enjoying a 12.3% rise in entries compared to last year.
There's also good news for gender balance, with more of the increase coming from girls taking science than boys, although girls are still under-represented at almost every stage of the scientific career, including at GCSEs

While welcoming these results, CaSE has warned that the momentum needs to be kept up, particularly in the maintained schools sector and with more emphasis on practical and engineering skills.

A-Levels
CaSE has also welcomed this year's A-levels results, with the number of students studying STEM subjects increasing in all five disciplines.

Despite this uptake we're disappointed that the JCQ examination body decided not to release data on school-type this year, especially since last year we saw what a gulf there was between independent schools and state schools. There also remains a significant gender gap in the numbers of students taking physics and maths.
Liberal Democrat Science Policy
The Liberal Democrats have published their new science policy paper  'Developing a future' - the party's first science policy since 1991 and, more importantly, the first that has been developed while the party is in Government.

CaSE was invited to submit a response to the policy review and we're delighted that many of our recommendations have been accepted, including increased funding for research, support for the STEM Diversity Bursary, and the Post-Study Work visa. We've compiled selected highlights of the policy paper here.

Writing for the CaSE blog, the paper's author and Liberal Democrat science spokesperson Dr Julian Huppert explains the  proposals and sets out his vision for the future of UK science
House of Lords Reform

CaSE has responded to news that the House of Lords Reform Bill is to be dropped by the Coalition Government. However, in the absence of reform, we will still be calling on the Government to improve scientific scrutiny of Parliament.

CaSE's recent report on House of Lords reform called for the science and engineering community to reflect on how the House currently uses expertise, and ask if it could be improved.

CaSE Annual Lecture and AGM - 27th November 2012
The 2012 CaSE Annual Lecture is scheduled to take place on the evening of Tuesday 27th November. Further details of our eminent guest speaker will be published shortly.

Other work
  • Andrea Marchesetti has joined CaSE for three months as a Project Officer. Andrea will help finalise an authoritative report arguing for the multi-billion pound proceeds from the 4G mobile spectrum auction to be invested in science, engineering, and innovation.
  • We would like to thank Graham Shaw, who interned with us from July to August 2012. Graham worked on a  number of projects, including identifying key STEM constituencies.
