Devolved Elections 2011
| | |
Following the results of the devolved elections on May 5th, CaSE is now looking to engage with the new Parliament and Assemblies in raising the profile of science and engineering.
CaSE has produced a devolved policy report, 'Science, Engineering & the Devolved Nations 2011', sponsored by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, which contains analysis of regional and national science and engineering performance, and forms the rationale for our campaigning work in Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast.
In a recent extract from the report on the CaSE blog, Dr Hilary Leevers looks at key STEM comparisons across the nations of the UK.
We recently attended the Science and the Welsh Assembly event in Cardiff Bay, organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry, which brought the science and engineering community together with the Welsh Assembly. CaSE held talks with a number Welsh Assembly Members and the Welsh Chief Scientific Adviser, and looks forward to helping develop a long-term science and engineering strategy for Wales. You can read a summary of the event by CaSE intern Dr Samantha Gan.
CaSE will also be attending Science and the Northern Ireland Assembly in Belfast on June 6th and Understanding and Influencing the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on June 15th.
For more details on CaSE's devolved work, including responses from the party leaders to CaSE's letter, setting out key commitments by the parties and the CaSE devolved blog, visit the 'devolved' section of our website, or follow us on Twitter.
If you would like any further information or wish to get involved you can also contact us directly.

Evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Select Committee
| | The HoC Science & Technology Select Committee has now published its report into Scientific Advice and Evidence in Emergencies. You can read the evidence CaSE submitted to the committee here. In it we stress the importance of funding and advice mechanisms to ensure expertise is available.
The S&T Committee is also undertaking an inquiry into the Spending Review 2010, and its impact upon the science and engineering base. You can read the evidence originally submitted by CaSE here. In it we argue that the science budget 'freeze' may have been a misnomer, and urge the committee to investigate the potential worsening funding situation.

New Policy Calender
| | |
CaSE has launched a new policy events calendar, available to view here.
We've tried to bring together upcoming policy events from a range of hosts into one resource, and hope you find it useful. We're not claiming this list is comprehensive, so if you're hosting or know of any events you'd like to add to the list, please do email us about them - the restrictions are that it should be connected to science and engineering policy in some way, and that it should not charge for entry.

Interns
| | | We would like to thank Samantha Gan for her help over the last few months as a CaSE intern. She has worked on a number of projects and led on the work examining the potential impact of House of Lords reform.
|
| Other issues that CaSE is working on |
- VAT. Universities are being increasingly asked by Ministers to share services: for instance, back-office functions, libraries, or technical equipment. Unfortunately, whenever they do engage in such sharing, they have to pay 20% VAT on the transaction to HM Treasury. The HE White Paper should recognise that promoting a sense of community across academia should be a VAT-exempt activity.
- House of Lords Reform. CaSE is looking at how reform of the House of Lords might impact upon science and engineering policy-making.
If you wish to feed into any of the above policy areas please get in touch. |
