Science Question Time - Innovation
| | The third Science Question Time is being held at the University of Manchester on Thursday 12th May. You can register here. We're inviting the panellists, including the entrepreneur Manoj Ranaweera and Professor of Computer Science Alasdair Rawsthorne, to discuss innovation in science and technology, alongside contributions from the audience.
The second Science Question Time was held at UCL and focused on science and maths education in schools. The discussion touched on topics including free schools, creationism, 'how science works', and continuing professional development. Click here to download or listen to the podcast. You can also listen to the first Science Question Time, which discussed the state of the scientific nation.

Devolved Elections 2011
| | |
With the elections less than 48 hours away, CaSE is asking voters to remind themselves of what the different parties and candidates are offering science and engineering.
12 of 14 leaders from the main political parties responded to CaSE's request for them to set out their policies for science and engineering
All key commitments from the letters, party manifestos and elsewhere, are summarised on our website:
Scottish Party Commitments Welsh Party Commitments Northern Ireland Party Commitments
CaSE has produced a devolved policy report, Science, Engineering & the Devolved Nations 2011, sponsored by the Royal Society of Edinburgh, which contains analysis of regional and national science and engineering performance, and offers recommendations for the future. Separate policy recommendations can also be viewed for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The underlying rationale for this work can be found in the more detailed devolved working paper.
We have also encouraged electoral candidates to engage with science and engineering issues by writing for the CaSE devolved blog, alongside our members and collaborators.
For more details of CaSE's election work, visit the 'devolved' section of our website, or follow us on Twitter.
Following the results on May 5th we will be looking to engage with the new Parliaments and Assemblies. If you would like any further information or wish to get involved you can also contact us directly.

Higher Education White Paper
|
| CaSE is holding discussions with members and collaborators, aimed at helping help the science and engineering community feed into BIS discussions on the HE White Paper.
CaSE Director Imran Khan has written an article for the HE Wonk blog, setting out measures the HE White Paper should contain in order to boost science and engineering.

CaSE Policy Email List | | |
CaSE currently runs a science policy email discussion list, which operates on an ad hoc basis. We use it when we need rapid reaction to media or political queries, and it provides a way for our members and collaborators to directly influence our work and output.
We are looking to include people from all areas of science and engineering policy. If you would like to be added to the list please get in touch

| Other issues that CaSE is working on |
- VAT. Universities are being increasingly asked by Ministers to share services; for instance, back-office functions, libraries, or technical equipment. Unfortunately, whenever they do engage in such sharing, they have to pay 20% VAT on the transaction to HM Treasury. The HE White Paper should recognise that promoting a sense of community across academia should be a VAT-exempt activity.
- House of Lords Reform. CaSE is looking at how reform of the House of Lords might impact upon science and engineering policy-making.
If you wish to feed into any of the above policy areas please get in touch. |
