Devolved Elections 2011

CaSE has ramped-up its campaign for the elections in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. We have:

We have also attended events in Edinburgh and Cardiff, directly engaging with candidates.

For more details of CaSE's election work, visit the 'devolved' section of our website, or follow us on Twitter.

If you would like any further information or wish to get involved you can also contact us directly. We are always looking for people to write an article for our devolved blog, particularly people directly involved with science and engineering in the regions.

Response to the Budget

CaSE welcomed the Chancellor's announcement of £100m of extra capital spending on science and engineering facilities, set out in March's budget - but warned that big capital cuts mean that the UK still risks falling behind in the global high-tech stakes, even though we are a world-leader in basic research.

CaSE also commented on other issues affected by the budget, including the Haldane Principle, the tax system, clinical trials and apprenticeships.

Further details on the science spending set out in the budget were given to CaSE by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and made available via the CaSE website

CaSE Director Imran Khan appeared on BBC2's Newsnight programme, being interviewed by Jeremy Paxman on the cuts facing arts and science.  Imran said, "We need to invest in a high-tech, knowledge intensive, economy - and through that we need to look beyond the next election, we need to look to the next 10-15 years and say 'how can we make sure we've got the research base and the highly skilled graduates to make companies invest here?"

You can watch the full episode here, with Imran's interview appearing 42 minutes in. CaSE also received widespread coverage in other media outlets following the budget.

CaSE Annual Lecture 2011

John Denham MP, Labour's Shadow Business Secretary, gave the CaSE Annual Lecture on 'Science and Growth', hosted by the Royal Institution.

Denham used the lecture to challenge the Government, saying "It's essential that the forthcoming Budget sets out a clear framework for science funding well beyond the current spending period, and ideally for a 10-year period."

CaSE welcomes this ambition. We believe that it is critical that the UK sets out a long-term strategy for investment in science and engineering.

A write-up of John Denham's speech is available here. You can also read the full text of his speech here, or listen to a recording of the full speech over at The Pod Delusion.

Science Question Time

The second Science Question Time, organised by CaSE, the Biochemical Society and staff at Imperial College London, was held at UCL and focused on science and maths education in schools.

The event featured a panel of CaSE Assistant Director Dr Hilary Leevers, Michael Reiss, Professor of Science Education at the Institute of Education, and Physics teacher Alom Shaha and was chaired by Dr Alice Bell, Senior Teaching Fellow at Imperial College London.

The discussion touched on topics including free schools, creationism, 'how science works', and continuing professional development. Click here to download or listen to the podcast. You can also listen to the first Science Question Time, which discussed the state of the scientific nation.

A third event is being planned for May in Manchester on the topic of innovation. For further details please get in touch.

CaSE Policy Email List

CaSE currently runs a science policy email discussion list, which operates on an ad hoc basis. We use it when we need rapid reaction to media or political queries, and it provides a way for our members and collaborators to directly influence our work and output.

We are looking to include people from all areas of science and engineering policy. If you would like to be added to the list please get in touch

New Website
CaSE has re-designed its website and blog, bringing the two together to create a new-look site: www.sciencecampaign.org.uk

The new website will help us to campaign more effectively and will allow our members and other key parties to make better use of the site. If you have any comments or suggestions to make please get in touch.
Other issues that CaSE is working on
  • Higher Education White Paper discussion. CaSE hosted a roundtable discussion meeting with members and collaborators, aimed at helping help the science and engineering community feed into BIS discussions on the Higher Education White Paper. BIS have asked CaSE to obtain feedback specifically on post-doctoral research careers and the status of taught and research masters degrees.
  • Parliament and Whitehall. Last month CaSE held meetings with representatives from the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology and the Technology Strategy Board.
If you wish to feed into any of the above policy areas please get in touch.
