Science and engineering claim victory in migrant cap
| | |
CaSE has welcomed the Government's new immigration rules as a victory for the science and engineering sectors. The new proposals give significant rewards to applicants with science and engineering qualifications.
In October eight Nobel laureates, including the new President of the Royal Society, signed a letter organised by CaSE saying that the UK "must not to isolate itself" from the global world of research.
CaSE's efforts in this area were recognised by the Minister for Immigration Damian Green MP on the BBC Today programme.

Devolved Elections 2011
| | |
CaSE is looking to make science and engineering an election issue in the 2011 devolved elections. We are currently:
- Producing a devolved working paper containing analysis of regional science and engineering performance, current policies and recommendations
- Writing to the leaders of the parties and will be circulating their responses
- Contacting prospective candidates asking them to engage with science and engineering issues
- Encouraging people to contact their local candidates
- Collaborating with members and key partners to raise science and engineering issues during the election, including writing for the CaSE Blog. CaSE has already posted articles by Cancer Research UK, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Northern Ireland Science Park.
- Acting as a resource hub for science and engineering policy. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) will be holding a series of election debates in Edinburgh on 9th March and Cardiff on 22nd March, both of which will be webcast live. Contact the RSC for further details.
For further details of CaSE's devolved election work, please visit the devolved section of our new website. You can also follow us on Twitter.
If you would like any further information or wish to get involved you can also contact us directly. We are always looking for people to write an article for our devolved blog, particularly people directly involved with science and engineering in the regions.

Letter to Michael Gove - Education White Paper
| | |
CaSE has sent a letter to Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State for Education, outlining CaSE's concerns over the Government's education proposals contained in the latest White Paper on Education.
The letter is supported by eminent figures in science and engineering, including Lord May and Lord Rees (former Presidents of the Royal Society), Ian Taylor (former Conservative Science Minister), Sir Harry Kroto (Nobel prize-winner), and Dame Bridget Ogilvie (former Director of the Wellcome Trust). The letter was also covered in the Times. Read the letter Read the Times article

Interns
| |
We would like to thank James Lush, who has worked as an intern for CaSE over the last month. James was involved in a number of projects, including research funding and overhauling the website, and has now left to take up a new position at the Medical Research Council Press Office. We are currently looking for a new volunteer intern. At CaSE you would join our small team in a fast-paced office environment, helping us shape policy at the highest levels and influencing media coverage of the sector. For further details on how to apply please see here. |
| Other issues that CaSE is working on |
- Higher Education White Paper discussion. CaSE is looking to help the science and engineering community feed into discussions by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) on the Higher Education White Paper. BIS have asked CaSE to obtain feedback specifically on post-doctoral research careers and the status of taught and research masters degrees.
- The first Science Question Time, organised by CaSE, the Biochemical Society and staff at Imperial College London, was held last month at the Wellcome Trust and was a great success. A second event is being planned in a couple of weeks on the topic of education. For further details please get in touch.
- Parliament and Whitehall. In the last month CaSE has held meetings with the Shadow Business Secretary John Denham MP, Chair of the Parliamentary Office for Science and Technology Adam Afriyie MP and hosted a discussion event with the Chair of the Commons Science and Technology Committee Andrew Miller MP.
Alongside this, CaSE has also met with the Director General for Universities and Skills at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
If you wish to feed into any of the above policy areas please get in touch. |
