Annual Lecture and AGM

CaSE Distinguished Lecture 2011
John Denham MP, Shadow Secretary of State for
Business, Innovation and Skills
Wednesday 9th March
The Royal Institution

You are invited to join us for the CaSE Distinguished Lecture 2011. The lecture is kindly hosted by the Royal Institution and will followed by a drinks reception. Please register for the lecture here or contact the CaSE office.

The lecture will be preceded by the CaSE AGM. All individual members and representatives from our member organisations are welcome. Please let us know if you are coming - the details of the venue and timings can be found here.
Science Budget Allocations

CaSE responded to the science budget allocations, which were announced by the government last month. As had been anticipated, dramatic cuts to capital spending on research were included in the budget allocations.

CaSE Director Imran Khan said, "The allocations confirm that UK science and engineering faces four very tricky years ahead. While some of our international competitors are looking to the future, British research will be busy retrenching."

CaSE offers further analysis of the budget allocations on the CaSE blog, alongside commentary by the Biochemical Society's Parliamentary and Policy Officer Beck Smith.

Scientific Advice in Government

CaSE objected to proposals put forward by the government to downgrade the importance of scientific advice in the formulation of drugs policy, as set out in the Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill ('Police Reform Bill').

CaSE Director Imran Khan has written on the CaSE blog, setting out the issues and calling for the government to respect the independence and importance of expert scientific advice.

Imran was interviewed on Radio 4's Material World programme alongside the drugs Minister James Brokenshire MP on the issue, as well as commenting in other media outlets.

Interns

We would like to thank Andrea Marchesetti for his help in November and December of last year as a CaSE intern. He worked on a number of projects and led on the response that CaSE submitted to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee inquiry into public procurement.

Other issues that CaSE is working on
  • Devolved elections. CaSE is currently developing its strategy for this year's elections in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland
  • Education & Childrens Bill. CaSE will be monitoring the Bill's passage to try to ensure that the teaching of science, technology and mathematics is protected in all schools and will be lobbying the Department for Education directly
  • Quango Reform. CaSE is monitoring the government's reform of Non-Departmental Public Bodies, particularly changes to key scientific bodies
  • Non-EU Migrant Cap. CaSE is continuing to review the proposed changes to Tier 1 migration and will also be working to ensure that Tier 4 (students) visa reforms reflect the needs of the STEM community too
  • Procurement. CaSE has submitted its response to the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee inquiry into public procurement as a tool to stimulate innovation.

If you wish to feed into any of the above policy areas please get in touch.
