Funding & the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR)
|
|
| CaSE held a member and collaborator meeting on July 22nd, kindly hosted by the Biochemical Society. Participants discussed how they had and were planning to respond to funding pressures in the run-up to the CSR. The need to present a united front emphasising the positive economic impacts of science and engineering was recognised, as well as the interconnectedness and interdependence of different subjects and sectors.

Education and the Academies Act
| |
CaSE has warned that the new Academies Act, which sped through parliament last month, removes the requirement that such schools would have to teach
the
national curriculum in science and mathematics. CaSE Director Imran Khan blogged
on
the issue on the new Scientist's S-Word blog.
These
concerns
were shared by the
Labour
MP Tristram Hunt, who wrote
to the Guardian about them. Read the full press release Read the Guardian article Read Tristram Hunt's letter S-Word

Other issues that CaSE is working on
|
- Non-EU Economic Migrants. CaSE will be responding to the consultation and inquiry on this - please share with us any data that would help us argue for the importance of non-EU economic migrants, and get in touch ASAP if you would like to meet with officials about this issue.
- Reform of the House of Lords. CaSE will be looking at how reform of the House of Lords might impact upon science and engineering policy-making.
- Regional Development Agencies. CaSE is monitoring the cuts to the science and innovation spend by Regional Development Agencies, whose annual spend on science and innovation was £380 million. If any other organisation is working in this area please get in touch.
- Labour Leadership Election. CaSE is working with Scientists for Labour to ask the candidates for the Labour leadership contest about science and engineering policies and will be helping to publicise their responses on the blog.
- Haldane Principle. The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills will be making a policy statement on the Haldane principle in the autumn - we are seeking to input into this.
