Election Statement

CaSE has published its short election document, Building our Future with Science & Engineering, developed with our members and collaborators. This summarises the key issues emerging from the three CaSE working papers on research funding, innovation and skills, and science and engineering in government. The document urges the parties to develop clear and long-term policies that will enable science and engineering to address societal challenges and build a more robust economy.

Letter to the Leaders
CaSE has written to the leaders of the main political parties, asking them to set out their science and engineering policies covering education & skills, research funding, innovation, and science and engineering in government. We will publish the responses in advance of the General Election. The Letter was also published in The Times.

Principles of Scientific Advice
The government has published its final version of the Principles of Scientific Advice to Government. CaSE worked closely with Sense About Science over the last few months to provide constructive input into government on this issue. The final response did take into account many of the concerns with the original draft, expect for retaining a statement on 'mutual trust'.

The Budget

The spring Budget included some welcome additional support for educating science and engineering students, research commercialisation and innovation. There was no clarity about the government's commitment to the 10 year Science and Innovation Investment Framework.

On 29th March, in answer to a parliamentary question, David Lammy stated that the government remained committed to the sustained investment set out in the framework.
