Science and Engineering Policy Debate |
CaSE has organised a political debate between the science policy spokespeople from the three main political parties:
- Lord Drayson (Labour), Minister for Science & Innovation
- Adam Afriyie MP (Conservative), Shadow Minister for Science & Innovation
- Dr Evan Harris MP (Liberal Democrat), Science Spokesman
The Institution of Engineering and Technology is kindly hosting the event at Savoy Place, London, in the evening of Wednesday 13th January 2010. Please register. |
| CaSE Notes |
CaSE has created a blog - CaSE Notes - so that we can get ideas on science and engineering policy out into the public arena. The first post is on SET Statistics - Progress since 1986? The blog will also feature guest posts from people with something interesting to say about science and engineering policy. You can subscribe to get e-mail or reader updates. Let us know if you have a blog on science or engineering policy that we should link to. |
| Integrity of Scientific Advice |
CaSE is working with Sense About Science to push forward the Principles of Independent Scientific Advice. CaSE submitted evidence to the Science and Technology Committee inquiry into the Principles. Nick Dusic participated in a meeting hosted by Lord Drayson to discuss how the government should respond. Lord Drayson will report before Christmas on how the Principles document will be taken forward within government. Professor John Beddington will be looking to incorporate certain issues in to the revision of the Guidelines on Scientific Analysis for Policymaking (see below), which CaSE will be responding to. |
| Government Departmental R&D |
CaSE continues to raise the issue of government departmental R&D. The recent SET stats showed that civil departmental R&D dropped in real terms from £1,652m in 2006/07 to £1,253m in 2007/08. Big drops in R&D funding were from DfID and Defra. CaSE is also looking at how departments are doing in implementing best practice in science and engineering in government.
Nick Dusic is giving evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee this week on the government's portfolio of support for R&D. |
SET Statistics
The Government have recently published their updated Science Engineering and Technology (SET) Indicators. The data summarises government financing of SET activities in the UK, as well as other R&D (HE, business, charities and overseas) in the UK, science graduate and employment data and international comparisons. CaSE will be analysing these statistics and using them within our policy and media work. |
