Election Campaign |
| We are gearing up our work in the run-up to the general election.
Political Debate CaSE has organised a political debate between the science policy spokespeople from the three main political parties:
- Lord Drayson (Labour), Minister for Science & Innovation,
- Adam Afriyie MP (Conservative), Shadow Minister for Science & Innovation
- Dr Evan Harris MP (Liberal Democrat), Science Spokesman
The Institution of Engineering and Technology is kindly hosting the event at Savoy Place, London, in the evening of Wednesday 13th January 2010. We will be issuing invitations soon. Policy Development Many collaborators contributed to our workshops in September. The ideas discussed will help guide our ongoing political discussions and will inform the political challenges that we will set the parties. Collaborative Working The online resource for sharing information in the run-up to the election includes a log of the parties' commitments and comments on science and engineering policy, a list of prospective parliamentary candidates highlighting STEM interests, and various background documents.
We appreciate any support for direct elements of this work, please contact us if you would like to become more involved. |
Impact Report
CaSE has published its latest policy report Impacts of Investment in the Science and Engineering Research Base. It analyses the government's economic impact agenda. The main conclusion of the report is that policy initiatives to increase the impacts of science and engineering research need to be informed by evidence, clearly articulated and fully debated prior to implementation and it recommends that the Treasury appoint a Chief Scientific Adviser. It was covered in a number of media articles, including Research Fortnight and the Times Higher Education.

| CaSE News |
In September, CaSE published the latest edition of its quarterly magazine CaSE News. As well as a round up of policy developments, this issue includes articles by both chairs of the Lords and Commons Science and Technology Committees, as well as pieces on UK manufacturing and the creation of the new Society for Biology. |
Lords' Inquiry into research priorities
CaSE recently submitted written evidence to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee's inquiry into setting funding priorities for scientific and technological research. CaSE Director, Nick Dusic, will be speaking at a seminar at the start of the Committee's inquiry later this month. | |
