CaSE Annual Review

CaSE has published its Annual Review (4 pages) for 2008/09. It gives a summary of CaSE's activities over the year, including meetings with ministers, policy consultations, events and campaign achievements. It also outlines progress against our five year strategy.

Highlights during the year, include:
  • Responding to the government's economic impact agenda
  • Highlighting science and engineering in the European elections
  • The place of science and engineering in government
Putting science and engineering at the heart of government policy

The Innovation, Universities, Science and Skills (IUSS) Committee published its report on Putting science and engineering at the heart of government policy. CaSE provided written and oral evidence to the Committee and many of the issues we raised were covered in the report. Key recommendations in the report:
  • Government Office of Science should be moved to Cabinet Office, Chief Engineers should be appointed to relevant departments and greater use of science advisory councils should be made
  • There should be proper consultation about setting strategic priorities, and developing a new science and engineering strategy.
  • The Haldane principle should be reviewed and the relationship between government and research councils should be transparent.
  • The new Committee should be called the Science, Engineering and Technology Committee.
Coherent advocacy in advance of the general election

CaSE hosted a meeting on the 7th July to discuss ways in which our members and others could collaborate in advance of the general election. It was agreed that CaSE would help co-ordinate election activities. We have set up an online account (Huddle) to enable information sharing, including a list of PPCs interested in STEM, party commitments and election messages. We have arranged two meetings in September (8th and 16th) to develop our science and engineering policies. CaSE will also be organising activities to get commitments from the parties on science and engineering. Please get in touch if you would like to know more about this area of work.
