Science and Technology Committee

On 25th June MPs voted to reinstate the Science and Technology Committee. CaSE pushed for this following the creation of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, by writing to the Leader of the House, commenting in the media, and sending a briefing to MPs. CaSE's efforts were acknowledged in the parliamentary debate establishing the S&T Committee.

The call to establish the S&T Committee was made by the by the IUSS Committee, the Science Minister Lord Drayson and Shadow Science Minister Adam Afriyie MP, and learned societies.

The S&T Committee, which will be begin in October 2009, will be able to conduct wide-ranging inquiries, covering the full scope of science policy and related matters including the science budget. The decision to re-establish it showed that there is strong support for proper scrutiny of science and engineering within Parliament. CaSE looks forward to working with the Committee and its chair Phil Willis MP.
Preparing for a General Election

CaSE has organised a meeting with the science and engineering community on how we can develop a collaborative approach to campaigning in advance of a general election. Nick Dusic gave a presentationto the Science Council about how such an approach could work.

The discussion will be held at the CaSE offices on Tuesday July 7th at 10:30 am - 12:00 am. If you would like to attend please contact Nick Hall on nickh@sciencecampaign.org.uk.
Welsh Chief Scientific Adviser

The First Minister announced that Wales will be getting its first Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA). The CSA will act as champion for science and will be able to challenge advice throughout the Welsh Assembly Government. The CSA will have direct access to the First Minister. CaSE has joined with many others, notably the Royal Society of Chemistry, for calling for such an appointment for many years. We are therefore delighted to have such a positive outcome and look forward to working with the CSA for Wales.
