Greetings!                      Borealis Arts logo

This 3rd painting of our series doesn't so much mark a significant development in the work as bring to light an important point; William Dubin - and his work - are deeply rooted in California Scene painting.

Mr. Dubin's alignment with the California Scene is one of proximity. He was raised on the coast, and immersed himself in all the cultural, educational, and artistic experiences that the region had to offer an artist in the mid to latter part of the 20th century.

As the artist explains, "In the 1940's & 50's the California Watercolor Scene painters were still being shown in a handful of venues in LA, and I was taken as a child to see these, so I literally grew up defining painting by what I saw.  Am I still a part of the CA Scene Painting concept? No, probably not, as it sort of died in the 1950's.  If anything I'm part of a larger scene; the philosophical return to a form of realism in painting that's taking place all over the country."

As with the previous featured paintings, Trolley to Old Town is not intended to be a faithful rendition of a particular vehicle in San Diego - something created for the enjoyment of the "rivet-counters."  Rather, it is a single moment in the life of a single artist, which through its artful handling, becomes a painting with great value for all of us who view it.
Important as the connection to the history of California painters is, it is of equal importance to note that this painting, and the entire body of work, is immensely enjoyable without any previous knowledge of art history.

Enough from me - enjoy the painting, and come view it in person on March 12.
