Greetings!
Hopefully you received and enjoyed last week's introductory email, which served as a preface to this series of eight featured paintings by William Dubin. To recap, the intention is to allow you a peek at the last two years of the artist's development, so that you can see where he's been, and where this body of work is going.
The first painting I'd like to introduce to you dates to 2008. Though certainly not the first appearance of a trolley in Mr. Dubin's work, this painting does mark a shift. In the artist's words, "it represents the end of a certain tighter style I was doing at the time, but also it opens the door to a looser and more painterly handling. You can see this in the difference between the way the Trolley and Mustang are painted VS the Motorman..... in other words, there's a 'transitional aspect' to the painting."
When you come to see this painting in the context of the full show on March 12, you see exactly what Mr. Dubin means. You'll also come to fully enjoy the fact that this stellar group of paintings are actually exploring painting, and just happen to be of our beloved trolleys.
Enough chat - let's explore this painting.

Trolley and Blue Mustang Original watercolor 10 1/2 x 15 1/2
Next week we'll follow the evolution of the techniques developed in Trolley and Blue Mustang to the next logical step in Mr. Dubin's development.
