Dear Greater Kansas City Post Members:
Greetings once again! I hope this update finds each of you well. It's been a very busy-but rewarding-few months and I'd like to highlight some key events that you have made memorable for our Post, as well as some future events:
The Greater Kansas City Post (GKC Post) was well represented at the Joint Engineer Training Conference & Expo (JETC) in St. Louis, MO, an event held on May 22-25 that attracted nearly 2,400 attendees and more than 300 exhibitors. During the conference, the GKC Post received all four streamers with Distinction and was awarded Distinguished Post at the Post Awards Breakfast. Likewise, our own Ann Ewy is now representing our Post on the National Board of Direction and attended the spring Board of Directors meeting held during the JETC.
I'm also pleased to announce that the GKC Post formally established the Muleskinner field chapter at Whiteman Air Force Base. The Muleskinner Post was established more than 20 years ago, with COL (Retired) Ron Johnston leading the effort. Getting a field chapter reignited at Whiteman is a great step in allowing the GKC Post to expand our efforts in meeting the mission of SAME and the GKC Post. The inaugural meeting of the Chapter was held at The Missons End Club at Whiteman, with a very large turnout. This included a briefing by the 509th Bomb Wing Deputy Commander as well as LTC Randy Boswell, the Base Civil Engineer. Special thanks to Chris Prinslow, Victor Poland, Merrill Watt and a host of others for making this a huge success!
The GKC Post is continuing to strengthen our relationship with the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) Engineer Branch Students and will be hosting a social on July 26 from 6-9 p.m. to introduce the students to our post membership. The location is at the Boulevard Brewery-please watch for additional information. Following this event, on July 27, Matt Metcalf will provide an overview to the same group about benefits of membership in our Post as well as the Society of American Military Engineers in general.
I would once again like to thank this year's annual sponsors. Their generous contributions to the Post make it possible to sustain a robust and diverse group of programs and initiatives throughout the year. This year's sponsors include: JE Dunn, HNTB, HDR, Yaeger Architecture, SAIC, Terracon, Affinis, Wilson & Company, Black & Veatch, Coastal, The Louis Berger Group, Cabrera Services, Mark One Electric Company, Poole Fire Protection, and Burns and McDonnell.
Thanks again for your involvement and dedication to the GKC Post and SAME!
Colonel Tony Hofmann, PMP
Post President, Greater Kansas City Post

Post Provides JETC Stipend
by Amy McCurdy
This year I had the pleasure of receiving a stipend from the Post to attend the annual Joint Engineer and Training Conference (JETC) held in St. Louis, Missouri. This was my first time attending and I feel so privileged to have had this opportunity. Being able to attend a JETC close to home was really an advantage because there were a large number of people from the Greater Kansas City post that were able to attend the conference. A group of us decided to arrive in style and took the train from Union Station in Kansas City to St. Louis. It wasn't the fastest travel option, but it did allow for lots of discussions beforehand about business and the Post.
I learned a great deal during the sessions and I enjoyed talking to people in the exhibit hall between sessions. My favorite part of the conference was the Post Awards Breakfast. Seeing our Post earn the Distinguished Post award was very gratifying knowing how much hard work and volunteer hours go into making our Post what it is. I found myself prouder than ever to be a member of SAME when I saw all the effort and dedication people around the world are devoting to SAME. SAME is truly a remarkable organization that provides so much to the members and the community.
This was my first JETC conference and sure not to be my last. I already blocked off the dates of the 2013 JETC on my calendar and have started recruiting people to attend with me. If you haven't attended one in the past, seriously consider it. You will meet a lot of new people, connect with old acquaintances, and walk away with a new appreciation of SAME.

SAME JETC 2012
by Melissa Kelley
The GKC Post was very well represented again this year at the SAME Joint Engineering and Training Conference (JETC). This year the event was held in St. Louis, Missouri. Young Members from the GKC Post rode out on Amtrak's Missouri River Runner line as an additional activity geared towards networking opportunities. One of the Young Members was Jason Meyers (Burns & McDonnell) who was attending JETC courtesy of the National Young Member stipend awarded by SAME Headquarters to Young Members based on Post involvement and contributions to the Society.
There were many events attended at JETC by members of the GKC Post, including a Young Member/Mentor event that was coordinated and emceed in part by Tom Poer (HNTB) and Ann Ewy (USACE - Kansas City District). Along with the dozens of break-out sessions focused on professional development and continuing education, there were many other events including a networking event at St. Louis's City Museum and the Society Ball. Additionally, there was a Post Awards Breakfast where the GKC Post was awarded its streamers and recognized for Distinguished Post, which was accepted by Col. Anthony J. Hofmann, post president.

UMKC Student Chapter Gearing Up for 2012-2013 School Year
by Neeli Langdon
The wheels are spinning as the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) SAME Student Chapter planning chapter activities for the upcoming academic year. New student chapter president, Samantha Baker, takes the reins with her energy and enthusiasm, working with the SAME Greater Kansas City (GKC) Post to plan for the year ahead.
Samantha's primary focus is to better integrate the student chapter with the GKC Post so that students have more interaction with and access to practicing engineers who can help them with internships and job preparation. She also wants to increase students' awareness of SAME and the benefits of student chapter membership.
"As SAME's president this year, I am really excited about where we are headed. We have a great group of students on board, as well as professionals, which makes it even more fun. We are hoping to increase our student base and get more involved with our professional group as well, and of course, enjoy ourselves in the process," Samantha said.
The GKC Post and the student chapter are working together to identify opportunities for Post members to talk with students about SAME and how students can maximize networking opportunities and other membership benefits. Events such as the Welcome Day and Convocation on August 19 and student chapter meetings, will be important venues for connecting with the students.
The GKC Post will additionally support the student chapter by helping to identify and fund field trip opportunities, provide resume reviews and offer an in-person session to help students prepare for the February UMKC career fair. The GKC Post is looking forward to working with the student chapter throughout the school year. |
