Message from the President
by Chris Prinslow, PE Post President |
Dear Post Members,
What a busy spring we've had at the Greater Kansas City Post. We've had several outstanding Post meetings. In April, Mr. Rex Goodnight provided a very informative briefing on the Corps of Engineers support to military operations in Afghanistan. Rex returned to Kansas City following a 12 month tour as the Engineering and Construction Division Chief for the Afghanistan North Engineer District. This was a joint meeting with the KSPE and MSPE chapters.
For our June meeting we had more than 80 members in attendance. In addition to presenting the Post's scholarship presentations, we had the opportunity to hear from COL John Moore, Defense Coordinating Officer for FEMA Region VII. COL Moore provided a very informative and timely briefing on the role of the Department of Defense in the Federal response framework. Given the protracted flooding on the lower Missouri River this summer and FEMA's response to the Joplin tornado in May, COL Moore provided a very educational and timely briefing.
In May, SAME held its annual Joint Engineer and Training Conference (JETC) in Grapevine, TX. I had the privilege and pleasure of attending this event. This was my first JETC since the GKC Post hosted the event in 2002. So, it's been awhile since I had the experience of attending a conference with more than 2,400 attendees. For those of you who had the opportunity to attend the conference, I'm sure you were impressed with not only the operation of the conference (e.g., registration, layout, execution, exhibit space), but also the quality of the technical programs and the awards and recognitions. And to top off the event, the society ball on the last night was a particularly fun event.
The highlight for the post was the Honors Ceremony where our very own Ann Ewy was presented with the Society's Young Member of the Year award. Ann accepted the award with grace--certainly well deserved!
I also had the pleasure of representing the Post during the Post Awards breakfast. I accepted the Post's four streamer awards: Education and Training; Outreach and Communications; and Relationships and Recognition Streamers. Great job GKC Post!
I look forward to seeing many of you in August, as the Post hosts the Missouri River/TEXOMA regional conference in Kansas City on 23-25 August 2011. Have a great summer! |

Citation for Young Member Medal |

Ann Ewy, PMP, was recently awarded the Young Member Medal at this year's Joint Engineering Technical Conference in Grapevine, Texas. The award was well deserved for demonstrating unparalleled dedication and commitment to the Society of American Military Engineers continuously since her introduction to the society nine years ago. Ms. Ewy is heavily engaged in S.A.M.E. at both the local and national level and has given countless hours of her time and energy to this organization. She has helped multiple young members of her local Post expand their roles in S.A.M.E. by mentoring and demonstrating through her own actions the value one can recognize through involvement.
.While still a Young Member, Ms. Ewy has become an integral and influential leader of the Greater Kansas City Post and has been involved in nearly every key decision and initiative undertaken by the Post in the past 5 years. Ms. Ewy has served as an officer of her local Post and served on the Board of Direction for the Greater Kansas City Post and the National Board of Direction for S.A.M.E. Ms. Ewy has not only taken on established roles within her Post but has taken the initiative to identify and carry out new roles. She has recognized her fellow S.A.M.E. members, raised funds for education and mentoring, volunteered her time and talents, and demonstrated commitment to enhancing the relationships of her fellow professionals. Ms. Ann Ewy fully embodies the mission, vision, and values of S.A.M.E. |
Greater Kansas City Post's Vice President's Dinner
by Matt Metcalf, PE |
This year's Annual Vice President's Dinner was held on April 14, 2011 at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. Traditionally, the Vice President's Dinner event has been held in appreciation of the contributions made by sustaining and individual members over the past year, and this year was no exception. More than 70 guests enjoyed an evening of dinner, drinks and networking, as well as a special appearance by the world-famous NFL Mascot, KC Wolf. Throughout the evening, a slide show was displayed on large screens throughout the facility featuring pictures of the Post's activities and accomplishments over the last 80 years. Attendees were presented with our new 80th anniversary coin, as well as pilsner glasses engraved with the SAME logo. The committee also held a raffle of various prizes, including Royals tickets, concert tickets, race tickets, gift cards and a Chiefs package.
The event raised $4,500 that will help fund the Greater Kansas City Post's Education and Mentoring program, which contributes to the development of future design and construction professionals. The Post would like to thank our annual sponsors whose financial support made the event possible: JE Dunn, HNTB, Louis Berger, Terracon, Wilson & Company, Burns & McDonnell, SAIC, Coastal and Black & Veatch. A special thanks, as well, to the VP Dinner Planning Committee for their hard work and dedication to making the event a success.

SAME HQ Stipend Helps Two Young Members Attend 2011 JETC |
The Kansas City Post was well represented at the SAME Joint Engineering and Training Conference in Grapevine, Texas. The Post contingent included young members Jim Feikert (Henderson Engineers) and Melissa Kelley (Shafer, Kline & Warren). Feikert and Kelley were both honored by SAME HQ for their Post involvement with young member stipends to attend JETC. SAME HQ awarded 43 stipends to young members throughout the country who had exceptional contributions and involvement at the Post level. The primary purpose is to expose and educate the next generation of leadership throughout the organization. "We are proud to have two of our members honored with this award. Feikert and Kelley are dedicated and involved members who are future leaders in this Post," said Post President, Chris Prinslow.
There were many events at JETC that the young member representatives took advantage of, including a networking event for young members, NCOs and fellows geared toward leadership development and the society ball. Feikert and Kelley found the breakout sessions to be extremely relevant and the exhibit hall was constantly busy and provided a great networking venue.
"Hands down one of the best conferences I have been to while also maximizing fun through after-hours events and activities. It was an honor for me to represent my Post as a young member," said Feikert.
"I left the event feeling a greater appreciation for how my efforts, as well as those of everyone else in my Post, contribute to the national mission of SAME," said Kelley. |

2011 Missouri River Texoma Regional Conference
by Mark Loes |

Hello GKC Post Members,
The Regional Planning committee is running at full speed and growing as the kick-off date is only eight weeks away. The committee is meeting each week now to plan for every detail to make this the best regional in SAME this year!
An updated program schedule will be published shortly as all the speakers have committed. Larry Myers, USACE, and the committee members did an outstanding job of obtaining high quality speakers for this event. The speakers are from local, regional and national levels with government and private representation. The committee has worked long hours making countless phone calls and planning meetings to get us to the finish line. The focus of the program is policy-implementation-technology for energy and civil works along with a session for Readiness and Homeland Security.
The website to register for attendance, booths, sponsorships and golf has been active since June 1. Please secure your position soon as there is limited space at each level. The Communications Committee has been sending regular e-blasts as reminders to all post members in both regions. Please encourage others to participate in the regional.
Our goal is to make this a fun conference for all to attend which means interesting speakers, sufficient time to network and visit exhibits, and interesting social activities. We encourage any ideas be submitted to the committee through our POC, Catherine Lamanske, or any committee member. Our next big need will be for 30 or more of you to volunteer to work a portion of the regional. We will be posting a list of positions to the website so be thinking about your contribution.
On behalf of the Regional Planning Committee, we want to thank all of the many people who have contributed up to this point in the process. We feel very strongly that we are on schedule and on budget to bring tremendous value and honor to the Greater Kansas City Post. |
SAME GKC Post 4th Annual After Hours Networking Event by Jackie Hacker |
The Greater Kansas City Post held the 4th Annual After Hours Networking Event successfully on May 5, 2011 at the Boulevard Brewery. The evening brought 140 attendees including small and large business and government together for an enjoyable evening overlooking downtown Kansas City. The networking was full of activity exchanging business cards, eating good food, tasting Boulevard Brewery's own specialty line of cold beverages, and building relationships!
This year the event opened opportunities for small businesses and new SAME members to exhibit posters about their company at no charge. A perfect, well attended setting for visibility of our Post, small business members and introduction about our new members. It is such a good idea; we are going to do this again next year with more emphasis, so small businesses be prepared to show off your capabilities!
We cannot bring our members and local small business community an outstanding, annual social networking event without sponsorships. We greatly appreciate and thank our sponsors and door prize sponsors for making this event another terrific networking opportunity to bring government and industry together!
Thank you to Burns & McDonnell, HNTB, Coastal, Louis Berger Group, Terracon, JE Dunn Construction, SAIC, Wilson & Company, and Black & Veatch. Thank you to our Door Prize sponsors: HMN Architects, Jackie Hacker and Associates, All World Languages & Cultures, Inc., J.M. Neil & Associates, and PSI USA. |

1971: The GKC 40-Year Mark, Melvern Lake and Post Accomplishments
by Tom Poer |

Forty years ago, the Greater KC Post reached its 40th year. Today, we double that mark by celebrating our 80th anniversary! Back in 1971, the Greater KC Post was led by Post President, COL William N. Doyle who was the Commander for the US Army Corps of Engineers, KC District. One of the projects overseen by COL Doyle was Melvern Lake south of Topeka, KS on the Marais des Cygnes River. The multipurpose pool for Melvern Lake now provides flood damage reduction, is used to supply water for several local communities, has many recreational uses and provides conservation to fish and wildlife.
Since Melvern Lake was commissioned by the KC District in the 70s, the Greater KC Post has been very busy. We have installed 40 new presidents and boards of direction, honored our military hundreds of times, hosted three SAME National conferences, provided well over $100,000 in scholarships to high school and college students, toured dozens of projects, educated scores of EIT's studying for their Professional Engineer's certification, incorporated the Society's first Field Chapter at Fort Riley, assisted in the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes, sent care packages to our soldiers overseas, assisted high school kids with MATHCOUNTS, supported several readiness exercises, adopted Hickman Mills High School and supported the construction/rehabilitation of a wetland ecological area at the school, published dozens of newsletters, assisted many small businesses to obtain work in the federal market, honored outstanding local teachers, started student posts at KU and UMKC, sponsored young scientists and engineers to attend SAME summer camps and fostered hundreds of friendships. To accomplish this, many men and women of the Greater KC Post have volunteered tens of thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars. What a proud heritage from only half of our years of service!
Over the past four decades, many things have changed, but Melvern reservoir continues to contribute to the regional water resources and the environment, and the Greater KC Post continues to be a vibrant post serving our nation from the heartland. |

Welcome Jeanne LeBron
by Jerry Adams | |
As outgoing SAME Regional Vice President, I would like to extend my best wishes to Jeanne LeBron, the new Missouri River Regional Vice President. I have had the great fortune to call Jeanne "friend" for a number of years and know that she will be a great RVP.
The role of the RVP is to be a conduit of information from the National Board of Direction to the local Post and in turn be the voice of the Post to the National Direction team. In addition, the RVP gives counsel and advice to the local chapters, installs new officers, helps with recruiting, encourages participation in the Streamer program and bestows RVP medals for outstanding accomplishments within the region, and assists the local chapters with nominations for Fellows and National Awards.
During my tenure for the last two years, it has been my distinct pleasure to participate in practically all Post events within the region. This endeavor required an extensive amount of travel and it was my personal style of "management by wandering around." Each RVP establishes their own style of coordination. To the Greater Kansas City Post, I want to extend my thanks for your support the last two years. Although I have stepped down from this position I will still remain extremely active in the Post. |
