Message from the President
by Mark Loes, Post President

Dear Post Members,

I have had a blast being the President! Our Post is energized with great people, creativity, and finances. The Post is ready to grow and continue to do great things in the coming years. The Post leadership--Executive Committee, Board Members, Committee Chairs and Committee Members-expresses thanks to our Sustaining Members and individual members who give so freely of their time and resources to support the Post in accomplishing our mission for the society and the nation.

Currently we have 50 volunteers who make up the leadership of the Post and many of them will continue their work in 2011.  I would like to acknowledge those individuals who have fulfilled their terms in leading the Post this year:

  • Phil Dula, Cape - Vice President
  • Ann Ewy, USACE - Secretary
  • Jason Meyers, Burns & McDonnell; Jeff Campbell, JE Dunn; Ted Hartsig, Olsson; Larry Myers II, HNTB - Directors
  • Roger Wilson, COL (Ret) - Immediate Past President
  • Nick Busalacchi, HNTB - Young Members Co-chair
  • Lt. COL Mike Fitzgerald, USACE - Readiness and Homeland Security Chair
  • Andy McCaskill, Burns & McDonnell - Programs Chair

Some Post milestones where achieved this year in membership.  We have experienced 20% growth in Sustaining Members and in total membership which includes individual members.  Sustaining Members reached 102 with total membership at 645--both historical highs.  Some will say the economy has influenced this growth and that cannot be denied; but when we ask new members why they joined, they say this Post has high energy and feel we do great things for the members and the community.  Our goal going forward is to maintain this energy so that all of our members stay to fuel the longevity of the Post.

Great things are happening in the Post and here are just a few examples:

The Student Chapters at University of Missouri - Kansas City and University of Kansas have been motivated and engaged in Post activities. We will be sending both Chapter Presidents to SAME Leadership Training in January to broaden their understanding and effectiveness in building a great Student Chapter.

A great meeting was held at our Fort Riley Chapter in December with more than 50 in attendance. There was major support from the Fort Riley leaders and an opportunity to build the SAME presence at the base.

Our third annual Industry Day will be February 1 and 2, 2011.  A new twist this year is the one-on-ones will be held at the spanking new digs for the Kansas City District of USACE, so sign up now to reserve your meeting. This event has turned into a wonderful partnership with Dean Kevin Truman, School of Computing and Engineering at UMKC.

We will be hosting the Missouri River / Texoma Joint Regional Conference August 23-25, 2011.  The last time we hosted a regional was 2005 and we are planning to make this the best regional in the Society.  The event will be downtown to take advantage of the renaissance taking place in our city.

The Annual Sponsorship Program is gaining momentum with nine Sustaining Member firms joining for 2011.  This is a program started by request from our Sustaining Members and with expectations of significant growth as knowledge of the program grows.  This program is providing financial stability to the Post to allow advanced planning of our events.

I leave the Presidency in good hands to continue to make Our Post the Best Post in SAME.  There are plenty of opportunities for you to participate in the leadership of the Post.  Please contact the incoming President, Chris Prinslow, to find out how to contribute and have fun supporting the Greater Kansas City Post of SAME.

Thank you,

Mark "The Prez" Loes

1993: Strategic Planning, SAME2 Awards, Hula Hula

by Tom Poer

historian banner

The year 1993 was a year of building on past successes and finding direction to bring our membership together to synergize as an organization and to give back to the community we serve.

1993 meeting
Post President Larry Myers thanks Paul Barber, Chief of the Engineering Division, Directorate of Civil Works for the Kansas City District US Army Corps of Engineers for speaking about the Great Flood of '93 at the December meeting.

Outreach included the Science and Mathematics Educators Awards (SAME2 Awards).  The program honored teachers who excelled in teaching science, mathematics, and technology.  The Post provided awards and checks to six teachers from elementary, middle, and high school at the Kansas City, Missouri and Shawnee Mission school districts.

Looking towards the future, "We planned and made a bid for the national convention and were awarded the 2002 national meeting," Larry recalled.

"I'm proud of the officers and board directors that served during my tenure. But, more importantly, the friendships that I have the pleasure of enjoying today were formed as well as nurtured during my presidency."

In May of 1993, SAME joined with the Engineer's Club, ASCE, MSPE, and KES to sponsor the Spring Fling Hawaiian party at the Leawood Country Club.  It was a very colorful evening with the Hawaiian outfits, decor and sounds ranging from the 50's to the 90's as guests danced to a live band.  The Spring Fling with a Hawaiian theme was a fun time had by all in attendance. Our 1993-1994 Post President, Larry Myers, called for our second strategic planning session which catapulted the Post into an era of thinking out of the box, change, and accomplishments. The end result was the Post not only receiving the "Best of the Best" designation from the national office, but also started our mentoring programs, outreach programs with the Hickman Mills School District, post members on  national committees as well as hosting the regional meeting.

Kansas City Post Hosts Northwestern Division Commanders

by Bill Yord

Nov 2 meetingOn November 18, the Greater Kansas City SAME Post hosted all of the USACE Northwestern Division Commanders for the final Greater Kansas City Post lunch of 2010. Larry Meyers was instrumental in making arrangements and coordinating the schedules of the district commanders. The commanders were in town for a strategic planning meeting, which was held at the Kansas City Marriott in downtown Kansas City. The program committee learned about their meeting and asked Larry if they would be interested in coming to lunch for a meet and greet. These gentlemen were more than happy to accommodate our Post. In addition, we got to hear from each one individually. The group included the following USACE commanders:

Ø  BG John McMahon, NWD Commander

Ø  COL Robert Tipton, NWD Deputy Commander

Ø  LTC David Caldwell, Walla Walla District Commander

Ø  COL Tony Hofmann, Kansas City District Commander

Ø  COL Steven Miles, Portland District Commander

Ø  COL Robert Ruch, Omaha District Commander

Ø  COL Anthony Wright, Seattle District Commander

Nov Div meeting

Each commander was encouraged to greet SAME members as they entered for lunch and each one sat at a different table so they could get to know as many attendees as possible.

BG John McMahon started the program out and was followed by the other district commanders. They spoke briefly about their respective districts and their mission. More than 120 people were in attendance at this SAME lunch, which was a great way to end the program year. Garrett Cross did an exceptional job arranging this event and making everything smooth and graceful.

The Combined Federal Campaign
by Jessie Miller and Jim Feikert

The mission of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with more than 200 CFC campaigns throughout the country and internationally to help to raise millions of dollars each year. Pledges made by federal, civilian, postal, and military donors during the campaign season (September 1- December 15), go to support eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world.

This campaign effort was led by new members Jessie Miller (BDY) and Jim Feikert (Henderson Engineers) and will have a greater impact on the Post's responsibilities in 2011. The Department of Transportation and the Kansas City District Corps of Engineers are two locations to look for the SAME booth for the CFC.

GKC Post Young Members Community Service Initiative
by Ann Ewy

Ronald McDonald House articleThe Young Members Committee of the Greater Kansas City Post SAME took on a new Community Service event in 2010. On Sunday, December 5, the group organized and provided a dinner to the local Ronald McDonald House. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City is to reduce the burden of childhood illness on children and their families by providing a home away from home when these families travel to Kansas City for their child's medical care. On any given night, the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Kansas City serves approximately 67 families. The Kansas City organization has two houses for guests to stay at, both located near Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri.

Ronald McDonald house 2Participating in this year's dinner were the Post's Young Members Committee co-chairs, Amy McCurdy (George Butler & Associates) and Kyle Kukuk (HNTB), as well as Matt Metcalf (Tug Hill Construction) and Ann Ewy (USACE-KC). The group purchased food items to make a homemade meal of mixed greens salad, spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, and brownies.  The House encourages groups to not only provide and cook the meal, but also to eat with the families and spend time interacting with them in the evening.

The Young Members committee appreciates the support of the Post in events such as this, and looks forward to giving back to our community even more in 2011!

2011 SAME Annual Sponsorships
by John Brake

Following the Pilot Program last year, the Greater Kansas City Post has decided that the 2011 Annual Sponsorship Program will be open to all Kansas City SAME Post members. We have made some minor changes based on our experiences. In 2011, there are only two packages for consideration:  (1) an option for firms that want to attend the major events as well as sponsor; and (2) an option for those who will likely not attend events. Annual sponsors will receive a listing as one of the top sponsors at the events and year-long listing on the Post Website and newsletters. This cost to an annual sponsor will be less than they would pay for the same sponsorships and benefits during the course of the year. The purchase at the beginning of the year will assist the Post in event planning and provide money for up front expenses. It will offer maximized benefits at a discounted cost and excellent year long recognition as a Post sponsor. Annual sponsors are not precluded from arranging for additional attendees or other benefits, not included in the package, for individual events.

All Kansas City Post members should have received a copy of the 2011 annual sponsorships. If you have any questions, you may contact John Brake at 913-991-8440.

SAME GKC Post 2011 Strategic Plan
by Phil Dula
The Board approved the 2011 strategic plan and budget on December 14, 2010. This plan and budget outlines the steps we will implement in striving to achieve SAME 2011 "Top Post" honors. Our goal is to achieve this milestone as we celebrate our 80th year of existence as the Greater Kansas City Post (GKC). Hours of hard work went into the development of the strategic plan and many thanks should be given to our committee chairs that have provided us with the steps we will take in achieving all streamer requirements and the activities that we will complete in making us stand out from the other large Posts of SAME.

The strategic plan as written contains each committee's agenda and plan that will align us with the SAME National Strategic Plan, meets the objective of obtaining all streamer requirements with distinction, incorporates the annual initiatives as set and approved by the Board of Directors, establishes our operating budget to accomplish the stated mission of the committees and sets long term objectives to advance the mission of the GKC Post.

Please take the opportunity to thank our members who gave their time to lead their committees and develop the corresponding component of the strategic plan.

GKC Post Supports Our Troops
By Ann Ewy

The Young Members Committee of the Greater Kansas City Post SAME provided support to deployed troops in 2010 through the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Kansas City District. The Kansas City District USACE and Northwestern Division are tasked to provide support to the Afghan Engineer District. This includes providing a continuous level of employees to support the mission in Afghanistan. District employees that volunteer for this critical mission come from all disciplines including engineering, real estate, contracting, legal counsel, construction, and many others. The District provides "Elf Packages" for the employees currently supporting the mission in both Iraq and Afghanistan, and this year packaged more than 20 boxes.

In 2010 the Young Members committee used its budget to purchase items to be included in the care packages. These "Elf Packages" were packaged and shipped overseas to some very courageous, giving people that are making a great sacrifice for our nation.  Thank you to the Post for supporting this cause!

GKC Post Hosts 4th Annual Sporting Clays Challenge
By Ann Ewy

Gun shoot 2October 4, 2010 marked the date of the 4th Annual Greater Kansas City Post SAME Sporting Clays Challenge. In 2007 the newly formed Fundraising Committee went out on a limb planning this event that was slightly out of the norm from the traditional fundraising efforts the Post had previously endeavored. No one knew what a great turnout and fun time would be had.

The event is held annually at the Powder Creek Shooting Park in Lenexa, Kansas. Since the 2009 event, Powder Creek expanded its sporting clays course, allowing for more participants. A total of 14 teams and five individuals registered for the 4th Annual Challenge making it a sell-out yet again this year. The shooting aspect of the event itself typically lasts two to three hours, followed by a buffet dinner of Kansas City's staple, BBQ, sponsored this year by Wilson & Company.

The Post can be proud of the more than $5,300 that was raised to support the Greater Kansas City Post Education and Mentoring Fund. The date for the 5th Annual event has already been set for early October 2011. Thank you for all the support that members continue to provide. And congratulations to the high scoring team for 2010, composed of members from the US Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District!

Fort Riley Field Chapter Holds Meeting
by Christopher Prinslow

Ft. RileyDid you know that the Greater Kansas City Post has a Fort Riley Field Chapter?  Yes, we do.  And recently the Post held a luncheon meeting at Fort Riley with the intention to provide a program for our Fort Riley members and an opportunity to network with the installation.  On December 9, the Post conducted a  well-attended luncheon meeting at Riley's Conference Center, Fort Riley, Kansas. Almost 50 personnel were in attendance. Mr. Jonathan Petry, Senior Architect with the Kansas City District Corps of Engineers provided a very informative briefing on the District's progress on achieving LEED certification of various military construction projects.

Following Mr. Petry's program on LEED certification, Burns & McDonnell presented the installation with a LEED Silver plaque and certificate recognizing the USGBC certification of the Marshall Army Airfield facilities achieving this standard. The plaque was presented to COL John Dvoracek, Assistant Garrison Commander for Transformation by the Chairman of the USGBC Great Plain Chapter, Ms. Stephanie Graham. Mr. Robert Fish, AIA, was the Architect of Record from Burns & McDonnell who was responsible for the submission of this project to the USGBC.

COL Dvoracek accepted the award and thanked the Burns & McDonnell team for meeting this environmental stewardship standard on behalf of Fort Riley.

Young Members Holiday Party

by Amy McCurdy and Kyle Kukuk

The Young Members Committee with chairmen Kyle Kukuk and Amy McCurdy hosted the SAME Holiday Party at the Blue Moose in Prairie Village on December 15. SAME provided drinks and appetizers for the group. There was a great turnout with approximately 25 people who took over four tables and when the tables filled up they spread out into a corner. The crowd was diverse with long-time members, retirees, and new members. Conversations ranged from work related discussions to personal holiday travel plans and all topics in between. There were many comments when the party broke up around 8:00 o'clock that they hoped there would be another holiday party next year.
