Greater Kansas City Post Newsletter
Message from the President
by Mark Loes, Post President

 Hello Post Members,

The Post has completed another quarter of good deeds for our members and community. In July, we had our annual luncheons with awards to our college scholarships and summer camp students. In August, the Young Members had a night at the Royals Stadium and the Post put on a GRAND AFFAIR for the SDVO Small Business Conference.  In September, we approved a new slate of officers and directors to serve the Post in 2011.

At the end of our September Board Meeting, a Past President commented on how much had changed for the better in the Post since his reign several years ago.  The Post has more than 50 activities over the course of the year and something is going on each month.  The next three months are equally full with the Sporting Clay Shoot in October, a community service project and a Support the Troop activity this fall, and we are planning meetings at Fort Leavenworth and Fort Riley. Planning is already underway for Industry Day in early February and the Regional Conference in August 2011.
There is a newsletter article from Jason Meyers regarding our participation in developing a "live" PE Refresher course at UMKC starting this month for Civil Engineering.  This was a large collaboration with UMKC and five professional engineering organizations.

The Post owes all of this great activity to the Sustaining Members and Individual Members that provide all the creativity and volunteer all the resources to be a dynamic, happening Post in the Society and the Kansas City community.  We are attracting the brightest people who recognize the value our Post has to offer and we should all be proud of our participation in the Post.

Civil P.E. Refresher Course Offered in Kansas City

by Jason Meyers

The SAME Greater Kansas City Post has developed a partnership with the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering, Kansas Society of Professional Engineers, American Public Works Association, American Society of Civil Engineers and the Missouri Society of Professional Engineers for the benefit of the Kansas City engineering community. These organizations have come together to sponsor the first live P.E. refresher review course since 2005.

Financial assistance is available from these professional organizations for engineers who wish to complete this review course. The twelve sessions will be held at the UMKC campus. Licensed engineers may enroll in this course to receive 36 professional development hours. For additional information and schedule, please visit the UMKC continuing education Web site or contact Kimberly Young at 816-235-5439.

Student Leadership Program
by Brian Killough
As a new student member of the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) who is from a student chapter beginning to reestablish itself at the University of Kansas, the SAME Leadership Conference in Grapevine, Texas was a very beneficial experience to me. Throughout the three-day conference, I met and interacted with several SAME members from all over the United States including West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, and several civilian colleges.

During the conference, our main focus as students was to learn about how to establish and improve our home chapters. Many great ideas were discussed and I feel the student chapter at the University of Kansas will benefit most from having more field trips, similar to the one we took to the Kauffman Performing Arts Center last spring, to gain the interests of students to join the chapter. Furthermore, teaming up and having joint meetings with other student organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers has proven to be beneficial for other student chapters.

I have high hopes for the student chapter at the University of Kansas and look to build on what I learned while in Grapevine, Texas. Getting younger members interested is going to be the key to our success and I am looking forward to this year.

Successful USACE Small Business and Service Disabled Veteran Business Conference
by Jackie Hacker
The USACE Kansas City District hosted in collaboration with the SAME GKC Post the "Industry Sustainability through Small and Service Disabled Veterans Business" Conference on August 17-19, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Resort and Conference Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri.  This conference provided Small and Service Disabled Veteran owned businesses a valuable, productive, and cost effective marketing opportunity to network with a vast variety of Government and prime contractors nationwide.

The event brought 225 Industry and Government attendees and exhibitors nationwide for an abundance of networking, valuable contracting information, training, matchmaking, and after-hours networking fun!   Attendees met the new Kansas City District Commander, Colonel Anthony Hofmann.  Small Business opportunities, regulatory updates, and training sessions were provided by Center of Veterans Enterprise Headquarters, SBA Office of Government Contracting, , GSA, EPA, AFCEE, PTAC, Savannah District, Mobile District, Portland District, St. Louis District, Omaha District; and Source Selection process by USACE KC District.  Attendees earned 13 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for the three-day conference!

A key component  to the Conference was the Matchmaking Event that provided Small Business owners an opportunity to have one-on-one meetings  with a choice of eighteen (18) Industry Prime Contractors, EPA, AFCEE, and six (6) USACE Districts.  What a great venue to meet that many potential clients in one setting and have their undivided attention to hear about your company's capabilities!

SB matchmaking
The monthly SAME GKC Post Luncheon was included on the final day of the conference featuring Guest Speaker Reservist Colonel Garth Anderson, Program Manager, Military Programs, Kansas City District. The luncheon was well attended by 130 SAME Members and non-members from across the country. SAME encouraged non-member professionals and companies to join one of the most significant, active, national organizations in the country that supports the federal government industry, our military missions, provides continual valuable training to government contractors, networking with government and industry leaders, education, and keeps its members in-the-know on contracting opportunities across the nation through venues like the USACE Kansas City District Small and Service Disabled Veteran Business Conference.

Change of Command Ceremony
By Amy Lines
Brigadier General John R. McMahon presided over the Change of Command Ceremony on July 23, 2010 for Outgoing Commander and District Engineer Colonel Roger A. Wilson, Jr. and Incoming Commander and District Engineer Colonel Anthony J. Hofmann. The ceremony was held at the Folly Theater in downtown Kansas City, Missouri with a reception following.

The Change of Command Tradition
The custom of acknowledging the change in commanding officers of a military unit by a formal ceremony dates back at least to Roman times. The ceremony's purpose is to emphasize the continuity of leadership and a unit identity despite the change in individual authority. The ceremony also symbolizes the transfer of command responsibility from one individual to another. This transfer is physically represented by passing the ceremonial flag from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander. The next Senior Commander in the chain of command traditionally performs the transfer.

Young Members Host Royals Tailgate
By Kyle Kukuk and Nick Busalacchi

The Young Members sponsored a Royals tailgate party on Saturday, August 21 for the Kansas City Royals and Chicago White Sox doubleheader.  The tailgate was held in the parking lot of Kauffman Stadium prior to the start of the first game and included food and beverages provided by the Young Members.  Twenty-one people--half of which were SAME Members--attended the tailgate and baseball festivities. The event was a big success and we hope to make this a yearly activity that includes many members, family and friends of the Greater KC Post.

COL John Atkinson (USA Ret), former Kansas City District Commander (1987-1990) led an energetic Post as the SAME Greater KC Post President in 1988.  The Post published its first ever Greater KC Post Newsletter in October of 1988 to improve communications from the Post leadership to the membership.  COL Atkinson's deputy, LTC Fred Reynolds, was the first newsletter editor and provided updates on upcoming meetings and the Post direction.   COL Atkinson shared with the Post, "I am committed to bringing you stimulating programs and meetings packed with professionally rewarding information. The more involved each of you are, the more benefit the rest of the membership gain."

In the fall of 1988, the Greater KC Post took an evening cruise up and down the Missouri river in the Kansas City area on the District's barge pushed by its tow boat the "Sergeant Floyd", also known as "Jumbo" the push boat.  While the guests enjoyed their night on the water, the Corps of Engineers were hard at work performing an "inspection of the river".  Approximately 75 SAME Post members attended this dinner cruise and enjoyed the sights of the old muddy Missouri River.

In  1988, the GKC Post was carefully planning to host the 1989 National Conference themed "Engineering Partners Dedicated to Defense".  Chaired by COL Gurnie Gunter (USA Ret), the strong planning committee included:

Capt. Robert Edmiston, Deputy Chairman
Tom Kirkwood, Steering Committee Chair
Jerry Butler, Programs Chairman
Jerry Adams, Publicity Chairman
John Stovall, Support Activity Chairman
Jim Steele, Budget and Finance Chairman
COL Brent Myers, Protocol and Operations Chairman
Woody Allen, Operations Center Chairman

This was an innovative planning committee, bringing new ideas to the SAME National Conference.   For the first time within SAME, the planning committee established multi-level sponsorships in Bronze, Silver and Gold.  Another first for SAME, the committee also organized registration, booths and sponsorships to be paid for all at once.

"It is a tremendous undertaking and a challenge to the Post to be on the cutting edge as we pioneer some new concepts in marketing and packaging the annual meeting."
