Greater Kansas City Post Newsletter
Message from the President
by Mark Loes, Post President

The Board and Committees have just completed an exciting six months of service to the Post and Society. This newsletter is full of articles about the great things this post accomplishes for our members and community. There are 45 active members that lead the Post mission, but it is our 94 Sustaining member firms and our 560 members that gives us our strength to be one of the leading large Post's within our Society. At a recent board meeting, we were discussing ways our membership can support our Streamer requirements to achieve the Post with Distinction honor, as we did in 2009, and I offer the following suggestions:

Engage your young professionals to participate in our Post

Circulate Post information among your staff

Forward articles that are published to our communications chair

Recommend professionals for positions within the Post and for National Awards

Suggest speakers for our monthly programs

The Post is accepting nominations for Post leadership positions and the national awards. The Post is putting a lot of energy into the Young Members, Student Chapters and K-12 programs and seeing positive results. We have an exciting Joint Service Disabled Small Business Conference with Omaha District this coming August 17-19. And, the Post is ramping up our committee for planning the Missouri River Regional on August 23-25 in 2011. So there is plenty of room for your support!!

Our members are great and you will see examples of the firms and individuals who have contributed in the articles of this newsletter. Please go to our website to view information and please contact members of the Board and the Committees with your ideas and comments.

Presentation of Check to UMKC
by Christopher Prinslow & Jason Meyers

Check presentation to UMKC 2010The Greater Kansas City Post, along with the School of Computing and Engineering at University of Missouri, Kansas City, hosted the 2nd Annual Industry Day event. This event exceeded the 2009 event with over 250 representatives from the architectural/engineering, construction, United States Corps of Engineers, and students from across the country in attendance.

Once again, the Industry Day event opened with a networking social hour at the Boulevard Brewery on February 2nd and the Education & Training Workshop on February 3rd at UMKC's Pierson Auditorium. The program included Federal Program briefings in the morning and three technical tracks in the afternoon sessions.

The event was a huge success for the Post. To thank UMKC and the School of Computing & Engineering, on April 28th, COL Roger Wilson (Kansas City District), Mr. Chris Prinslow (Kansas City District), and Mr. Jason Meyers (Burns & McDonnell) presented a check to the UMKC's SCE "Dean's Discretionary Fund". Accepting the check for UMKC included Dr. Kevin Truman (Dean of SCE), Dr. Appie van de Liefvoort, (Chair of Computer Science Electrical Engineering Department), Ms. Megan Foster, President of SAME Student Chapter Member and Dr. Mark McClernon (Chair of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department). The contribution to the School of Computing & Engineering will be used to procure additional equipment for the school's civil engineering laboratory.

The post will begin planning for next year's event in the near future. We're looking forward to another successful event in Jan 2011!

Vice President's Dinner
by Phil Dula

The 2010 Vice President's Dinner was a success both from a social event and as a fundraiser. We had 100 folks in attendance at the May 21, 2010 event that was held at the New Theatre Dinner Restaurant where we enjoyed a social, dinner, and the entertaining production of "Becky's New Car" starring John Davidson. There are so many to thank for making this event a success and hopefully I have remembered everyone in this brief article.

First, let me extend my thanks to the Vice President's Dinner committee members Jackie Hacker of Jackie Hacker and Associates, Jessie Miller of BDY, and Ted Hartsig of Olsson and Associates. The hard work and creativity of this group was incredible.

Secondly, I wish to thank our sponsors whose financial support provided us the opportunity to create the venue for 2010. Many thanks to:

Marquee Room Sponsors, 2010 Red Level Sponsors and Grand Prize Sponsors:

JE Dunn

HNTB

BDY

Regency Room Sponsors:

Jackie Hacker and Associates

Prudent Technologies

EMR

Our Marquee and Regency Room sponsorships provided the open bar that the attendees enjoyed as part of the social period. In addition we were able to draw for the door prizes that were donated by the following firms:

IPOD 64 ($350) / Louis Berger                           Christine Przygoda / BDY
Gift Certificate ($250) / Black and Veatch        Robyn Handley /HNTB
Gift Certificate ($150) / Black and Veatch        Michael Snyder / Prudent
Gift Certificate ($100) / Black and Veatch       Amy O Neill / J.E.Dunn

SonyPortable DVD Player $100 / CAPE           Jeff Campbell / J.E. Dunn
Nikon Digital Camera / CDM                              Joe Williams / BDY

A special thanks is extended to BDY (Carl Yaeger and Jerry Adams) who I know worked behind the scenes to provide additional resources to make this event take off.

Finally, I wish to extend my thanks to Leon and Julee Schieber of Black and Veatch who were the lucky winners for the Grand Prize drawing held on June 24, 2010 at the SAME GKC POST Awards meeting, The Grand Prize was a 54" Plasma HDTV valued at $1,000. The Schieber's generously decided to donate the funds allocated for this prize to the Post Scholarship fund under the name of Black and Veatch. This is an incredible giving gesture by the Schieber's.

In summary, the event was well attended, entertaining, and we were able to raise over $5,000 for one of the Post's primary missions; the support of education. Thank you everyone for making this year's Vice President's Dinner a success!

AECOM

2010 Scholarship Winners
by Jason Meyers

This Year we awarded three scholarships in the amount of $1,000 to three very deserving students.

Our first awarded scholarship was awarded to Marshall Frey. Marshall is a junior at Kansas State University majoring in construction science and management. He was a Nominee for the 2009 Kansas State Construction Science undergraduate of the Year. Marshall currently chairs the KSU associated general contractors student chapter open house and volunteers at the Wildcat ministries as well as the Kansas State Associate General Contractors Work Projects. The charitable organization allowed him to work on ABC's Extreme Home Makeover and the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan, Kansas.

The second awarded scholarship was presented to Thomas Freeman. Thomas is attending Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri majoring in Pre-Engineering sophomore this coming year. He plans on transferring to Missouri Science and technology and majoring in Mechanical Engineering. UMKC mttThe University of Missouri - Kansas City SAME Student Chapter met on the Campus of UMKC in Flarsheim Hall on April 21st for pizza and a discussion on the value of SAME. A panel of guest speakers included: Jason Meyers of Burns & McDonnell; Skip Johnson of Walton Construction; Tom Poer of HNTB; and Chris Prinslow of the Kansas City District, USACE. Each speaker provided their background, how they became involved in SAME and their perspective on the value of SAME. Reasons SAME can be of value to a student at UMKC were discussed including:

Networking with nearly 80 firms within the Post could result in relationships and potential job opportunities

Exposure to the federal market place that provides diversity and can aid in future business opportunities

Opportunities of involvement to give back through community service

Opportunities to see engineering projects first hand

Leadership opportunities within the Student Chapter

The meeting was well attended and stirred additional interest in the Student Chapter.

Student Chapters Tour Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
by Kyle Kukuk, Young Member Co-chair

student tour of PACThe Student Chapters of the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri - Kansas City toured the $420 million, Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, April 21st. The Young Members as well as Jeff Campbell of JE Dunn helped organize the first joint event for the two student chapters. Student chapter presidents Kayla Kukuk of the KU Student Chapter and Megan Foster, UMKC Student Chapter, pulled together several students to attend the tour. UMKC and KU students were joined by KU Professor, Dr. David Parr, and GKC Post members Kyle Kukuk, Garrett Cross, and Tom Poer of HNTB.

Inside the PACThe tour detailed the two performance venues: the 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre and the 1,600-seat Helzberg Hall. These theatres will be known for their architectural uniqueness and their state of the art acoustic design. The tour also included the current construction of the Grand Lobby, a central glass-enclosed lobby that connects the two performance halls and leads to a sloping greenspace on top of the nine-acre parking garage. Many of the students brought their cameras and took pictures throughout the structure including some great views of Kansas City.

PACThis was a very successful event for the Student Chapters of UMKC and KU. The students were able to view an iconic building in the construction process while ending their school years with a memorable tour that will hopefully lead to greater things to come.

Post Sponsors Summer Engineering Camper
by Ted Hartsig

The Greater Kansas City Post sponsored another outstanding high school student to one of the annual SAME engineering summer camps. Competition is very tough, and typically only one student from each post in the country can be selected. This year, the Post sponsored Marshall Pickart from Wichita, Kansas. He was selected from among nine very, very qualified applicants.

Marshall is going to be a junior at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School in Wichita, where he maintains a 4.125 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. He is an Eagle Scout and a musician, having achieved a Superior Performance Ranking by the Kansas State Activities Association. He plays piano, organ, and saxophone. When completes high school, Marshall hopes to attend one of the service academies - hopefully the U.S. Air Force Academy. "The most interesting thing at the camp was the demonstrations, including holding a 945 degree ceramic tile in my hand."  Marshall stated that he thanks the Post very much for choosing him and that he really enjoyed his time there.

Mr. Kirkwood is a Life Member of SAME and has been actively engaged in the engineering profession for over 60 years. Joining the Greater Kansas City Post 6/1/1982, he has been a member almost half of his career. Mr. Kirkwood has contributed to the leadership of SAME, serving the Greater Kansas City Post as a director, president, and committee chairman, and participated in the Post hosting of two SAME national conferences as well as other meetings including Missouri River regional and District Engineer presentations at Engineers Week.

As chair of the Kansas City Post Nominating Committee over the past 20 years, Mr. Kirkwood has been successful in bringing leadership to the Post that over and over again has positioned the Post with recognition as an outstanding post. His career encompasses 52 years as a consulting engineer in the Midwest, serving the public and private sectors in utilities and public works. He was a principal in his firm, and concurrently was an active leader in the professional community, serving as Missouri Society of Professional Engineers president and Kansas Consulting Engineers chairman, as well as on several national boards. In 2003 the American Public Works Association recognized him as one of the Top Ten Public Works Officials in the nation. Now retired from consulting and public works positions, he continues his professional contribution through active involvement in SAME, APWA and other societies, and in community affairs.

Fellows insigniaThe Society of American Military Engineers (the Society) established the Academy of Fellows in 1995 to recognize those members of The Society who have distinguished themselves in service to the Nation, the engineering profession, and the Society. To be nominated, a member of the Society must meet strict standards and each nomination is carefully considered by a reviewing committee and approved by the SAME Board of Direction. The Constitution of The Society provides that Fellows are "members of the Society who have rendered dedicated and outstanding service to The Society and to the engineering profession and who are approved to become a Fellow in accordance with procedures established by the Bylaws. Nominees shall have been members of The Society for a minimum of ten years and shall remain in good standing in The Society."

At the recent SAME National Training Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, Dean Kevin Truman was awarded the Bliss Award. This premier award is presented to one distinguished Member of the Society for excellence in educating, mentoring and motivating students in architecture, engineering and related disciplines, and partnering with the local SAME Post to allow Post members to mentor student members.

Truman - Bliss awardThroughout his 30 years as an educator, Dean Kevin Truman has provided excellence in educating, mentoring and motivating students. As Dean and as a professor of engineering at the University of Missouri - Kansas City (UMKC) and at Washington University, he has impacted the lives of thousands of engineering, architecture and physics students. In a strong partnership with the Greater Kansas City Post SAME, Dean Truman has brought the UMKC School of Computing and Engineering and SAME together on many fronts. Partnering between SAME and the University includes the founding of the SAME Student Chapter and initiating a new Industry Day Conference that engages students not only from UMKC, but from the University of Kansas Student Chapter. Dean Kevin Z. Truman, PhD is a deserving recipient of the Bliss Award Nomination.

Congratulations Dean Truman! We look forward to continuing our partnership between the School of Computing and Engineering and the Greater KC Post with you into the coming years!

Distinguished Post
by Mark Loes

The Greater Kansas City Post earned the Distinguished Post designation in 2009 and was eligible for consideration for the Top Post Award for the Large Post Category by the Society. This is a true team effort to meet all the criteria as described below that includes Post members, Sustaining Member firms, members of the 20 committees and the Board of Directors. The submittal process is a large effort led by Post Secretary-Ann Ewy. Congratulations to her and the team of writers for a successful submittal of the Post's year of hard work.

National SAME develops a five year Strategic Plan to accomplish the Society's mission. The Post's activities to support the annual mission are outlined in four Streamers: Education and Training, Outreach and Communication, Readiness and Homeland Security, and Relationships and Recognition. Specific action items are outlined in major criteria with multiple elements some of which are required and others that are desired. A Post can earn the Streamer by meeting all the required elements in the Streamer. To receive the Streamer with Distinction, all required and desired elements must be met. To become a Distinguished Post in the Large Post Category, our Post had to receive all four streamers with distinction, fulfill the Membership requirement (net zero change) and submit a financial report.

A Swift Kick in the Grass
by Nick Busalacchi

Young members kick off the summer with the Post's inaugural kickball team

On a serene, grassy diamond in southern Kansas City, Dominique Noel takes a deep breath and steps to the meticulously spray-painted plate. The stakes have never been higher: it is the final inning and the game is tied at 3. Misjudging his opponent, the pitcher delivers what appears to be a change-up - manna from heaven for the burly clean-up kicker from Poole Fire Protection. With a resounding thud, Noel sends the red orb sailing over the chicken-wire fence in left field. No erector set is bringing that one back - nope, that one belongs to Hercules.

kickball_1That was the scene at Blue Ridge Soccer Complex last weekend where the Young Member Committee kicked off the summer 2010 kickball season and the Post's first-ever sports league. Sporting lime green jerseys and bomb pops, A Swift Kick in the Grass (as they're known among other KC Big Ballers) defied low expectations and finished opening day in second place. After being narrowly defeated by "One Week A Month We Can't Score" in the first game of their double header, A Swift Kick in the Grass rallied to overcome The Jiminy Kick-Its in Game 2.

Athletic prowess was on exhibit by all team members. An exceptionally strong defensive performance was had by Ann Ewy in center field who, in a truly amazing display of multi-tasking, ran down two fly balls in the final inning of Game 2 to all but ensure the team's victory. Jason Davis, Libby Hungerford, Eric Reed and Melissa Kelley also had impressive opening day performances. Co-captain Kyle Kukuk was noticeably absent due to an injury from water aerobics.

kickball_2The Greater Kansas City Post is fully funding the team this summer, which includes customized t-shirts, seven weeks and twelve games of play, and a post-season league party. The league is already proving to be a great way for young members to interact with one another and network with other young professionals from the Kansas City area.

A Swift Kick in the Grass hopes to send "Bad Assets" the way of Bear Sterns this Sunday at 1:00 PM. Please contact  Nick ([email protected]) if you are interested in attending or participating.
