President's Message

Hello Everyone,

This is quite an exciting time for me as I write my first President's Report. We finished  the 2010/2011 year off with a great Summer BBQ hosted by our own Carolyn and Steve Touhey at Two Eagles Lodge in Union Bay. Great food and conversation were had by all. There was no time to waste as your new board of directors have hit the ground running to prepare for a busy and exciting year ahead with lots of great changes.

At the last AGM, we voted in our association's new name change "Comox Valley Home-Based & Small Business Association, "to better reflect our organization's membership and to attract additional members who can share and benefit but did not fit the "home-based" description.    To better reflect this change publicly, we are modifying our logo to reflect the changes. Thanks to our members Ginny Alliston and Carolyn Touhey for spear-heading this project over the past two weeks.

You must have noticed our next change with the new look for our newsletter, thanks to Sarah Brune of Inner Harmony Healing. It's colorful, professional and very informative with great information that you will be able to use in your business.

And another significant change is the format of our meetings. Seeing that in the 2011/12 year, the greatest turnout was for our power networking events, we're doing more of them and will save educational speakers for events throughout the year.

At our September 6th meeting at the Best Western Hotel, I hope you will join us with Terri Perrin of Fine Art of Intention Feng Shui and Sean Murphy of Valley Healing  Therapeutic Massage will be the two spotlight speakers followed by another POWER NETWORKING EVENT so bring lots of business cards and a good 2-minute "brief" about your business and what makes a good lead for you.

Like I said, we have hit the ground running.

Mark your calendars also for the 8th Annual Small Business Expo on Saturday, September 29th 10am to 3pm at the Native Sons Hall in Courtenay. Some tables are still available, so contact me asap to ensure your spot.

As your new president, I would like extend an invitation to each of you. Please feel free to call or email me or any on your board of directors if you have any suggestion for how to make this organization even more valuable to you and others, ideas for fundraisers so we can keep our dues low despite increasing room rentals...or any other suggestions. Know that we value input and we will do our very best to implement them.

Wow...and it's only August.   I am so looking forward to this year and I hope you are, too. I wish you all a safe and happy summer. See you all in September.

Program Report

Our meeting format has changed this fall due to an increased demand for networking opportunities. We will be having two members doing extended spotlight speeches plus increased time for members to share information about their businesses. Our first meeting will be on September 6th and it will have a Chinese theme.

Terri Perrin of Fine Art of Intention will explain some of the principles of Feng Shui, and teach us how to set powerful intentions for positive change, increased prosperity, and a higher level of professionalism. Terri will also be giving a preview of her 'Work the Pond' networking series that she will be presenting through the Chamber of Commerce later in September.

Our second speaker will be Sean Murphy of Valley Healing Therapeutic Massage who will be doing a short talk and demonstration of Taoist Tai Chi. Participation will be part of this presentation which will show the energy enhancing and health promoting aspect of this exercise.

Besides our two presenters, there will be networking opportunities for members to give a two minute promotional speech about their business.

If you are a member who is interested in doing a Spotlight presentation at one of our future meetings, please contact

Sean Murphy at 250-941-8181 or Email

We look forward to seeing you at our meeting this September.
