Greetings!

The Ihangane Project has so many exciting developments to share with you!   I want to thank all of you for your support. Without you, none of this would be possible.

In our section on our Solar Power Project, you can read about how your support has helped us to complete our first goal at Nyange Health Center. Learn  how you can continue to help without spending a dime.

In August, I will have the opportunity to travel to Rwanda with The Ihangane Project's Anita Wray and Catapult Design's Heather Fleming. While there, we will be checking in with our projects, setting the stage for new ones, and connecting with other NGOs on the ground.

Enjoy our newsletter, and stay tuned for more progress reports!

Solar Power at Nyange Health Center

Sustainable Green Solutions in Rural Rwanda

Great News! We now have raised enough funding to update the solar equipment at Nyange Health Center!! Catapult Design is working directly with the Rwandan vendor to finalize details of their bid.

When we travel to Rwanda in August, we will visit the health center and meet with the solar vendor to pull all the pieces of this process together. Catapult is also working on a plan to provide a monitoring and evaluation program after the installation.

Through this process, we have learned that "nothing stays the same" in the developing world.  Since we began this work in Nyange, the Global Fund has built a new building to house a laboratory and to provide further HIV services. Nyange Health Center is extremely grateful for this gift. Unfortunately, this new building will be electrified with a gasoline generator. At best, gasoline generators create fumes that affect the health center's ability to provide a safe and clean environment. At worst, the health center will run out of funding to purchase gasoline and thus be left without any electricity at all.

We are committed to converting this building to solar power as well. This newer project will cost an additional $25,000. We are confident that we can make this happen, but we need your help. Please consider voting for us on the Ideablob contest at  http://bit.ly/d7uzR  ~ voting is free and can help us raise $10,000!

 HIV Prevention through Economic Stability

The Women's Association continues to be a success. While in Rwanda, we will meet with the craftswomen to discuss further details of their business plan and to learn how we can better help support their sustainability. We have been working hard to find new markets to expand the beautiful crafts that are made by Ihangane Women's Association. TIP is in the final process of establishing an online store. Please visit our website in the next few weeks to begin shopping!

malnutrition center Providing Safe Nutrition to Children at Risk
Positive Deviance & Beyond

The Ihangane Project is working with Dr. Ngirabega to provide HIV-exposed infants and children with safe alternatives to breastmilk. This includes safe formula alternatives at 6 months of age, and the gradual introduction of age-appropriate solid foods over time. The model of Positive Deviance will be utilized as a means of improving the nutritional status of children despite the severe poverty that exists in this area.

During our upcoming trip, TIP and Catapult will consider various options for the clean water needed to prepare infant formula. We are also connecting with other non-profits working in Rwanda such as Gardens for Health and Project Healthy Children, to learn more about the local resources and to ensure that we are working within the existing infrastructure.
opportunity collaboration Opportunity Collaboration
