St. Patrick Life and Facts...
We know for sure that St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain
but it is not certain exactly where. Many scholars think
St. Patrick was born in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton in
Scotland. There is another group that think the great saint
was born in present day Wales. From his own writings,
we do know that Patrick was born to Christian parents,
that his given name was Maewyn Succat and that he was
kidnapped by Irish pirates at the age of 16 and sold into
slavery in Ireland. At about the age of 20, Saint Patrick
escaped and sailors took him back to Britain. In a dream he
was told to leave Ireland by walking to the coast and looking
for a ship. Dreams and visions came to him for the rest of his
life and he considered them to be Divine Intervention.

After studying for the priesthood, Saint Patrick was ordained
by Saint Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre around 416.
In 432, Pope Celestine I consecrated him as a bishop. It is
not totally clear if St. Patrick was in Ireland during all of
this period or not. We do know for certain that Saint Patrick
was sent back to Ireland to spread the Good News.
He arrived at Slane on March 25, 433.

Patrick must have spent a lot of his life in good company.
Many of his disciples and converts were also made saints
for their work with him; Auxilius, Beningnus, Iserninus
and Fiacc , all were canonized by the early church.

St. Patrick's Day Celebrations in the United States
The very first recorded celebration for St. Patrick's Day was
held in Boston in 1731. In New York, the first well organized
and officially named St. Patrick's Day parade goes back to
1762.
Irish immigrants, some of them soldiers in the British
Colonial Army marched around several sections of
New York. In following years, many factions and groups
held many different parades, balls and celebrations.
In 1850, it was decided to form one grand parade and
for the most part this tradition has continued ever since.
The New York St. Patrick's Day parade is the oldest civilian
parade in the world. Three million people watch the  parade
and it usually has over 150,000 participants who march.

Many, many cities and towns around the US have parades
and festivities. A small family fun event is held locally in the
LA area in the suburb of Canoga Park. (See listing this issue)
On Saint Patrick's Day, Chicago is famous for its great
parade and for dyeing the Chicago River green every
March 17!
San Diego has a good parade but not on the actual
day, it is usually on the closest Saturday and the city also
hosts a one day festival. Phoenix has the same idea.
Close but no cigar for Irish purists!
Los Angeles had a small parade for a few years with
fire-trucks and a few hundred marchers but it never really
caught on in a big way.
This year it was not held due to
budget problems. However, to their great credit,
the City of Los Angeles working with the
Irish Fair Foundation does hold an Irish Civics Day each
year at City Hall. This ceremony is one of the oldest
commemorations honoring St. Patrick and the Irish
west of the Mississippi River!

Letter from the Publisher...
We wish all of you a great St. Patrick's Day!!
We hope you found information here that will make
your St. Patrick's Day Celebrations better than ever.

As most of you know, the weekly Irish E-Missive is a service of the
Irish News and Entertainment.
We are now in our 18th Calendar Year of printing.
We revised our print schedule and we started expanding our
distribution as of our January-February issue.
Instead of printing on a monthly basis, we now print every other
month and we are printing an additional two Special Issues each year.
A few less issues reflect the changes in our economy and the
newspaper industry. We firmly believe that the demand still exists for

a quality niche market publication and these changes will help
us continue to deliver a paper with great Irish Content on a regular
basis. In addition, we have another great change to announce;

with our next issue we are changing our format to a magazine style
tabloid layout. No more fold and the actual page size will be slightly
smaller. The print edition of our paper is going national and adding

new features. We think the NEW LOOK and REACH will be an
enhancement and welcome change that our readers will appreciate.

As always, we want to hear from you, so please send us your
comments and questions.

If you like the Irish News E-Missive;
You are not alone...

We have over 4500 Weekly Readers!!
We add more every week; thanks to those
of you kind enough to pass on this E-Mail!!
