Greetings!

Welcome to issue 26 of Know-how. Readers will be anxious to discover the names of the three lucky members who won iPod Shuffles after completing the recent Information Services Audit - and to learn about the key findings of the Audit. In addition, readers will find out how to save money through better utilities and linen management, link to a London employer that is making a stand against ageism and see how chefs train for field work in the military...who knew that a filing cabinet could be so versatile?

We hope you enjoy this issue of Know-how. Don't forget to add CPD-qualifying activities with the orange check mark to your Institute CPD tool located on the Member Benefits page.

Yours sincerely,

Professional Development Services

NEW Management Guide: Linens: A Best Practice Guide for the Hospitality IndustryOrange Check Mark
Linens are a significant investment for hospitality businesses whether purchased outright or obtained through a commercial linen service. The recent rise in cotton prices further bolsters the need to secure, monitor and manage linen stock to reduce damage and losses. Did you know that "[t]he 76 per cent rise in the price of cotton over the year (2010) to the end of November translated into a 38 per cent rise in the cost of a sheet"?

A new resource has appeared over the summer called the quarterly Hospitality Employment Index. Produced by People1st, the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry's sector skills council, and Caterer.com, the recruitment website, the Index charts the number of jobs posted and applications made on Caterer.com. The Index analyses the jobs data (UK) and notes any emerging trends... More>>>
FREE Tools to Reduce Carbon and Energy Costs

Orange Check MarkMany members of the Institute will recall the Hospitable Climates programme managed by the Institute until 2008 when, regrettably, government funding ceased and the programme had to close. A partner in the programme, the Carbon Trust, has adopted and updated the Hospitable Climates resources and now offers the hospitality industry a number of documents and online tools to help various types of hospitality businesses get a handle on their energy costs.

An easy-to-use online training tool called 'Cut Carbon, Cut Costs' can, with basic energy use information from any hospitality business, show an owner/operator how and where... More>>>

"[T]he feature that I like most about the IoH Information Services is the prompt and friendly responses to queries. If I get stuck on a subject the librarian will recommend two or three key texts as well as links to make it easier to access them."

Tom Goss, MIH

"...[A]s far as the institute's services, they are the best and most reliable out there."

 Angela Bentley, MIH

"I find the online information services to be very useful; also attending local branch events is a great way to network."
