MANCHESTER BRIEFING A GREAT SUCCESS!

Around 40 people gathered at the Arora Hotel, Manchester on 28th June to attend a special Institute of Hospitality regional seminar.

Peter Lederer CBE FIH MI, Chairman of Gleneagles, and President of the Institute of Hospitality, warned that the working environment was changing rapidly, leading to some fundamental shifts in the way managers of the future will have to behave.

Philippe Rossiter FIH, Chief Executive of the Institute, added that the serious competition for management talent being faced by the industry existed not just within the UK, but at a global level.

Picking up the global theme, Dennis Dunn MBE, Pro-Vice Chancellor Manchester Metropolitan University, highlighted the importance of preparing young men and women to not only secure their place within the international hospitality industry, but also of the vital need to encourage within them the ethos of continual professional development...Read More>>>

eMarketingGet the Most out of E-Marketing
Most of us use the Internet daily, with Google often the first port of call before going on holiday or visiting a restaurant. So, it's surprising that the People 1st State of the Nation 2010 report found that a staggering 41% of UK hospitality businesses do not even have a website or possess the capability to trade online. With competition at an all time high, if businesses are keen to stay one step ahead of their rivals, the opportunities the Internet offers cannot be overlooked..

Top Tips on E-Marketing from Stonebow, the People 1st training division

Website: Unless you are a self confessed Luddite, your business will have a website. Ensure it is up-to-date, has plenty of engaging, good quality, high resolution images that appeal to customers - ask yourself, if you visited this website would you like to stay at the establishment/book a table at the restaurant? Use simple and accurate titles and meta tags to describe your business for the website and update these regularly to help optimise your Google search rankings...

The UK's cafe, dining and hospitality providers are joining forces to combat fraud and theft from their outlets, and reduce violent attacks against their front line staff.

The Cafe, Dining and Hospitality Loss Prevention Forum is modelling itself upon the success of the Retail Loss Prevention Fashion Forum and, more recently, the Health, Beauty and Pharmacy Loss Prevention Forum.  Its aim is to tackle crime, and the losses felt by restaurants, cafes and hospitality venues ranging from a coffee concession on platforms of local railway stations to dining experiences at stadia.

Signed-up members so far include Starbucks, Costa Coffee, EAT, Compass Group UK & Ireland, The Gondola Group and SSP UK and Ireland.

Pressure Has Never Been A Good Advisor

Sven Gade FIH, Director and Head of Consulting at PKF - The Consulting House, Dubai, tackles the subject of dealing with pressure and making the right decisions in times of crisis.

Not a day goes by without announcements of projects cancelled, postponed, placed on hold or to be sold worldwide.  Yet it appears that Dubai is getting more than its fair share of attention.  There appears to be an underlying "See? Told you so!" mentality in the market, which makes it "chic" to report on the latest project bad news.

Yet, economically minded people are aware that markets are not influenced so much by finance, demand and supply, but first of all by a much more human phenomenon:  Belief!  If enough participants believe that the markets will turn down - guess what? - they will!  So in reverse if sufficient knowledgeable industry experts started to present positive business opinions that should help to turn the current scenario around, should it not?...Read More>>
