COLLEGE TOWN LEADERSHIP
Student Groups Across Our Nation Reach Out To Haitian Victims Birmingham-AL The UAB Kaleidoscope highlights University of Alabama Birmingham chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America teaming up with the Intercultural Society to assist Haiti. A variety of student organizations are working to help bring relief to earthquake-ravaged Haiti after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck last Tuesday. The Baptist Campus Ministries, a student organization that participates in campus ministry, is accepting donations which will be sent to Haiti. Checks can be made out to either Baptist Campus Ministries or Birmingham Baptist Association Disaster Relief and mailed or dropped off at the BCM's office. Students are instructed to write "Haiti" on the memo line. Bill Morrison, president of the Campus Ministries Association, an interfaith ministry, said the group is in the process of planning a fundraiser for all students and staff to participate in. |

| ALCOHOL & ENFORCEMENT
"We Must Choose To Partner Rather Than Blame, To Persist Rather Than Surrender, To Honor Students Lost To Alcohol By Aggressively Seeking Better Outcomes In The Months And Years Ahead"
State College,PA- Damon Sims and Tom Fountaine of the Centre Daily Times comment and report on a problem that is shared by colleges, universities, and their host cities across our nation. One irony about the problem of dangerous drinking among Penn State students is that it can be either a wedge dividing town and gown or a common cause that binds our community as one. It is easier to assign blame than to find solutions, and simpler still to think there is nothing more we can do. The actual complexity and subtlety of the issue are easily overlooked in favor of either a simplified "Animal House" worldview or the complaint that too little is being done. But nothing is gained from pointing fingers or oversimplifying an endlessly vexing problem. We must choose instead to join together -- town and gown, permanent residents and students, police and landlords, neighborhood associations and fraternity alumni, hospital administrators and tavern owners, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and local schools -- one community drawn together by the single purpose of finding a more reasonable and civil relationship between our community and alcohol.
Survey Shows Students Drinking Less On Campus But More Off Campus
Kansas City,KS-The LJWorld.Com describes results of a recent Kansas University survey. Results indicate that KU students are drinking less alcohol on campus but more alcohol off campus. Simply pushing students off-campus to drink doesn't mean they'll drink less. KU officials continue to analyze additional data from national surveys to address alcohol issues. |

"RecycleMania" Builds Excitement Nationwide West LaFayette, Ind. (WLFI) - WFLI.COM reports Purdue joined roughly 580 schools nationwide last weekend, participating in a competition called "RecycleMania." Carmen Martin, president of the student group Boiler Green Initiative, said the rules for RecycleMania are simple: the school with the most recyclables collected wins."The goal is to have more recyclable material and less waste per capita than the other schools. There's actually a place where you can see how we're doing. We'll be keeping track of all the 'Big 10' schools and all the Indiana schools that are competing on the website," said Martin. Organizations across Purdue have each adopted one of the competition's 10 weeks and will do what they can to collect recyclables. The Boiler Green Initiative has adopted the first week. Members spent their Sunday cleaning up Mackey Arena after the girls' basketball game. Martin said there is definitely excitement in the air."This is our first year. We are really excited about getting it off with a bang, and making sure everyone knows we are participating, which is why we are really excited about stuff like this," said Martin.
Greeks Reaching Out To State College Borough Officials State College,PA-The Collegian explains discussions to benefit campus and community. The greek community brought talks of town-and-gown relations to the fraternity house Wednesday night. Leaders in the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Council and student government met with State College Borough officials Wednesday to discuss longstanding issues like excessive drinking and accountability. The meeting, held at the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house at 346 E. Prospect Ave., is the first of a series of meetings to foster communication between student leaders and borough officials. The meeting came at the request of the Lion Fraternity Alumni Association (LFAA), a group for Penn State greek alumni, according to a press release. IFC President Max Wendkos (senior-marketing and psychology) said the group came up with several good ideas and is ready to create an action plan. Some of the initiatives discussed included creating an IFC community relations committee, establishing a new strategy for neighborhood policing and creating an Emergency Room unit at the University Health Services. | |
