COLLEGE TOWN LEADERSHIP
New Fire Truck Represents Strong Town And Gown Relations With Hamilton College And City Of Clinton
CLINTON, N.Y. -The Hamilton College News describes the positive Town-Gown climate for campus and community. The Village of Clinton Mayor Robert G. Goering and Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart announced today that Hamilton will make a single contribution of $250,000 toward the purchase of new ladder truck for the Clinton Fire Department. The $1 million truck, currently on order from Ferrara Fire Apparatus in Holden, La., replaces a 23-year-old piece of equipment that is becoming outdated and increasingly costly to maintain, according to Goering. The central feature of the new truck will be a 100-foot, mid-mounted ladder. "A ladder truck is like an insurance policy," said Clinton Fire Chief Mark Young. "You hope you never have to use it, but when you need it, it's the most important piece of equipment that you have."Goering said the contribution reflects strong town-gown relations between the college and the local community."Our community has a great relationship with Hamilton College," Goering said.
Land Court Judge Rules Against Regis College On Housing Plan For Senior Citizens Weston, MA -The Weston News reports on rulling.Regis College went too far in proposing a 362-unit residential and educational complex for senior citizens across from its current campus, a state Land Court judge ruled this week, saying that the Dover Amendment to bypass local zoning bylaws does not apply."The project's educational component seems subordinate to Regis' desire to provide elderly housing and/or a source of revenue for Regis," wrote Judge Alexander H. Sands III. "Therefore, I find that the proposed use of the project is not an educational purpose as contemplated by the Dover Amendment." "We believe that this is a seriously flawed decision and are currently evaluating our options," said college president Dr. Mary Jane England yesterday. "Other colleges and universities, indeed, all religious, educational and other nonprofit institutions that have benefited from the Dover Amendment to overcome local zoning challenges should be very concerned about the implications of this judge's ruling."

Boston Questions Northeastern University On Commitment To Limit Its Undergraduate Enrollment to 15,000 Boston, MA- The Globe offers insight into renewing a long-simmering dispute, Boston officials are accusing Northeastern University of reneging on commitments to limit its undergraduate enrollment to 15,000 and move more students out of city neighborhoods. In a letter to the Boston Redevelopment Authority Friday, Michael Ross, president of the Boston City Council, cited Northeastern figures showing that enrollment now stands at 15,585, with 7,800 of those students, or 50 percent, living in off-campus housing.Northeastern previously pledged to curb its enrollment to help ease an overall housing crunch that contributes to the high cost of rental units in Boston, which consistently ranks among the most expensive places to live in the country. Ross said the 585 extra students have a significant impact on dense neighborhoods like Mission Hill, where their presence creates inevitable conflicts over property upkeep and noise and reduces the availability of affordable apartments."They're taking an already difficult rental market and making it worse,'' said Ross, who is asking the BRA to force the university to reduce enrollment and accept fewer students next year. "They have to acknowledge this is a destabilizing factor in the city.''

Growing Pains Result In Parking Frustration At IUPUI
Indianapolis,IN-The Indiana News explains construction frustrations.Parking problems are common on college campuses, but issues at Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis have been exacerbated by construction that took away 600 existing spots, causing seemingly endless frustration for some students. The construction is aimed at solving a long-term parking problem at IUPUI, a sprawling urban university with growing enrollment. For students such as Gina Glaros, the search for parking took up to 45 minutes on the first day of classes. "I'm late for class," Glaros said, after spending at least a half-hour searching for a spot. "I just dropped my brother off to go to his class. It's nuts." University officials said the overall parking problem will be short-lived, as construction on a new parking garage wipes out 600 spots. Parking and shuttle rides are free at a lot on Indiana Avenue, about a half-mile north of campus, a lot that wasn't filled Monday. "It takes about five minutes to get to the class, so it's not too bad," said Casey Atchley. "You don't have to wait any longer than 10 minutes. We've made that commitment," said Emily Wren, vice chancellor of IUPUI facilities. "Nobody has 20 minutes to stand around." Students said the shuttles come so frequently that they are almost as convenient as parking on campus. Getting students to alter their parking habits has been a challenge, resulting in most off-campus parking spots being left empty.
