BUDGETS & ECONOMY
Michigan College Swaps Tuition for Property HANCOCK, MI - According to a release by the Associated Press, a bargain hatched by two school administrators over lunch will give a private Michigan university space to grow and local students a significant perk if they attend their hometown college. Finlandia University in Michigan's Upper Peninsula will receive an athletic field and a classroom building that's no longer needed by the public schools in Hancock, a former mining town of 4,900. In exchange, for at least the next 12 years graduates of Hancock Central High School who qualify for admission to Finlandia will get free tuition.
AIER Releases Its Best College Destinations
The American Institute of Economic Research (requires a fee) has released its College Destinations Index, a list of the 75 best college locations in the country. The institute does not arrive at these rankings by interviewing students or visiting classes, but by studying government documents that detail the number of new businesses in the area, for example. In addition to observing the number of coffee shops, the institute looks at cultural outlets and how much the city spends on research and development. Among "college towns," or cities of fewer than 250,000 people, Ithaca, N.Y., home to Cornell University and Ithaca College, was No. 1. The top-ranked location among "major metros," or cities of more than 2.5 million, was New York City. Among "mid-sized metros" - cities with populations between 1 and 2.5 million - San Jose, Calif. was No. 1. "Small cities" were those with 250,000 to 1 million people, and of those, Boulder, Colo., was the winner. |
| ALCOHOL & ENFORCEMENT
Alcohol Intervention Program
EAST LANSING, MI - Michigan State University and East Lansing have just launched a new pilot initiative to address alcohol related arrests through both the City Court, as well as at MSU. This pilot is a collaborative program that will attempt to intervene with troublesome student alcohol use before it becomes a serious issue for the student. This new program is of significant importance because MSU does not have a code of conduct that extends beyond campus, thus this will be the first effort to connect off-campus arrests to an on-campus conversation. The pilot focuses on first year students arrests within the first 6 weeks of the fall semester for alcohol related offenses. The State news and MSU News reports.
At JMU, It's "Your Call" Alcohol Program
HARRISONBURG, VA - The Breeze student newspaper reports that the University Health Center's Substance Abuse Prevention office at James Madison University has come up with five initiatives to provide students with information and resources to reduce harm. Collectively, the comprehensive media campaign is titled "your call."The first program, started Aug. 28, encourages responsible hosting for students living off campus. Each weekend, the office hands out 50 cases of soda to off-campus students who reserve one on Thursdays from its Web site. |

Another Big 10 College Town Considers Backyard Chickens
MADISON, WI - The Journal Sentinel reports that Madison has been a chicken-friendly college town for years, even inspiring an entertaining documentary, Mad City Chickens. 1. Syracuse, NY -Educational Sanctions - Does your school offer an educational sanction for students who commit infractions off-campus? Syracuse has a great one and we are looking for other examples.
2. Mansfield, CT - The director of the Department of Building & Housing Inspection for the town of Mansfield Connecticut asks,"Our town is home of the University of Connecticut. Like many similar communities we are struggling with quality of life issues for both student and non-student citizens. One enforcement tool we are exploring is the use of a Tenant Registry to help limit over crowding of dwelling units. Any information you could provide on this topic would be greatly appreciated."
