Movies on the Grass to be Shown On, Off Campus This Year
MANHATTAN, KS -The K-State Collegian announces Movies on the Grass for students, faculty and townspeople to be held on Sundays both on and off-campus at Kansas State University and the City of Manhattan. In the past, MOTG only showed films on campus, but for its fifth year the committee has decided to break new ground and show several of the films in off-campus locations. This decision was made because the group wanted to expand its audience and show that MOTG is not just a student event.

Investing in Cornell is Investing in Community
Mount Vernon, IA - An editorial in the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun gives the opinion from Cornell College development officials that an investment in Cornell College is an investment in the Mount Vernon-Lisbon community. There is a history of the community embracing students and students embracing the community. This is why students chose to attend Cornell not only for the One Course At A Time program and the many extraordinary opportunities that are offered on and off campus, but also because of the relationship between the college and the community.

College Towns Offer Improved Quality of Life Comparisons

New Geography published an article on college towns as robust economic and social engines often providing healthy job growth, low costs of living and rising property values. Universities have long served as incubators for fresh thinking and new research. They also provide a solid economic base for area residents, allowing college towns to hold the distinction as areas of low unemployment. The article explores a number of colleges and college towns telling how and why the college communities outperform similar non-college communities.

SAFETY, HEALTH & ENVIRONMENT

UB Partners With Police to Curb Crime
BUFFALO, N.Y.- WIVB reports by video and article how the city and the University at Buffalo are teaming up to take back the neighborhood of University Heights. Two and a half months after a U.B. graduate was shot to death on Main Street, near the university's south campus, U.B. is stepping up patrols, working in cooperation with Buffalo and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority police. The program includes $200,000 thousand dollars of patrol and surveillance devices purchased by U.B. including Segway Personal Transporters for police, new bicycles for community policing, and a total now of five street cameras. An additional program described by WIVB helps to improve safety in the University Heights neighborhood. The Blue Door-hanger Delivery program uses 2700 door-hanger kits providing informational products  about how the college and city are making it a better neighborhood, how they make it more liveable and more safe and secure.

Editorial - University Should Pass Off-Campus Behavior  Policies
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The Star-Ledger editorial board provide an opinion on Seton Hall students  living in South Orange where the overwhelming  percentage of students are well-behaved but the small group of rowdy students are large enough to affect the village's quality of life. This is why South Orange recently passed an Animal House ordinance aimed at obnoxious behavior that requires landlords to do a better job screening tenants and keeping them in line. But the village also wants to know what Seton Hall can do to help. The editorial board believes that it is time SHU drafts and implements a strict off-campus behavior policy to crack down on the rowdiness -- insuring that chronic offenders are suspended or expelled and that Seton Hall students will be, as the university's website proclaims, "leaders in their professional and community lives."
PLANNING & HOUSING

Georgetown Begins Ten Year Planning Process for Campus and Nearby Community
WASHINGTON, DC - The Georgetown Voice writes on an expected debate over the 2010 Georgetown University Campus Plan becoming a serious town-gown showdown. An editorial in the Voice adds an opinion from Vice President of Student Affairs, saying that students need to show residents that Georgetown students don't come from a "generation of entitlement" and that we are fully capable of finding common ground with our neighbors. Students should attend meetings and speak up for themselves. After all, Georgetown residents are not the only group with a vested interest in the Ten-Year Plan.

1. Syracuse, NY -Educational Sanctions - Does your school offer an educational sanction for students who commit infractions off-campus? Syracuse has a great one and we are looking for other examples.

2. Mansfield, CT - The director of the Department of Building & Housing Inspection for the town of Mansfield Connecticut asks,"Our town is home of the University of Connecticut. Like many similar communities we are struggling with quality of life issues for both student and non-student citizens. One enforcement tool we are exploring is the use of a Tenant Registry to help limit over crowding of dwelling units. Any information you could provide on this topic would be greatly appreciated."
