COLLEGE TOWN LEADERSHIP
Benefits of Hosting the Town and Gown Conference in 2008BRYAN, TX - Texas A&M University and the cities of College Station and Bryan, Texas along with other local entities hosted the Best Practices in Building University/City Relations Conference here in our community in June 2008. It was an excellent opportunity for the community to come together to plan and work on a common goal. Though a few staff had previously attended earlier conferences, there was little involvement from a broad variety of public officials before hosting the conference. Today, due to the Town and Gown relationship and a common goal, both cities and the university are enjoying a higher level of cooperation with one another and improved relationships of students who live in single family neighborhoods through better and more coordinated educational and enforcement effort. PM Wants Closer Town and Gown Relationship CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA - ABC News reports that Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has suggested a much closer relationship between the Australian National University and the public service, to help train future policy makers. Mr Rudd has proposed establishing a National Security College with an academic focus on giving senior officials better skills. "These initiatives, incorporating national security and public service excellence, would not only help generate the future leaders of the Australian public service. The strategic relationship would also build the capabilities for university-based experts to support the Government."
Town, Gown Build Dialogue With Neighborhood Walk Program STATE COLLEGE, PA - The Centre Daily reports on a State College-Penn State program that aims to make students more courteous to residents. This year's LION (Living In One Neighborhood) 115 students, borough officials, campus leaders and police officers distributed goodie bags to off-campus students with tips on safe partying practices like, "Clean up before sun-up." Started last year to promote healthy town-gown relations, the move-in week event had 24 groups travel door to door to about 500 homes. The borough's population is about 75 percent students, said Borough Manager Tom Fountaine, who joined student body President Gavin Keirans and council President Elizabeth Goreham in welcoming students to off-campus life.

CU Releases Results of UCSU Safety Survey, Announces New Safety Initiatives BOLDER, CO - The News Center at The University of Colorado at Boulder released results from the University of Colorado Student Union (UCSU) spring 2009 safety survey and announced a number of new safety initiatives, including improvements to campus lighting and transportation systems and the addition of six CU police officers.
According to UCSU Tri-Executive Tom Higginbotham "We're focusing our efforts on strengthening the relationship between UCSU and the administration, which will help us to tackle these and other tough issues with improved communication, collaboration and coordination," Higginbotham said. In conjunction with UCSU, the Safety Initiatives Coalition, a collaborative group of representatives from both CU and city of Boulder organizations, conducted the online survey in March of this year. The organization intends to make the survey an annual event.
Sierra Club Magazine Ranks CU the Most Eco-enlightened BOULDER, CO - Daily Camera writes that the Sierra Club`s magazine named the University of Colorado as the most "eco-enlightened" college in the country. CU jumped up a spot from last year`s No. 2 ranking. "This ranking is not a surprise, but it is a wonderful tribute to the hard work of our students, faculty, staff and administrators," said Chancellor Phil DiStefano. "Over the course of the last nearly six decades, they have made sustainability a campus priority and have done the hard work to make it a reality."

PLANNING & HOUSING
Residential Neighborhood Conservation Districts BRYAN, TEXAS -A common challenge in Town and Gown communities is creating cohesiveness among renters and permanent homeowners - especially when they all live in the same residential neighborhood. A few years ago, officials in Bryan, Texas, heard from dozens of residents who were fed up with renter neighbors throwing loud parties, parking on the street and not keeping up with their yard and home maintenance. The issue sparked a lively community debate. Some college students felt like they were being targeted and were not welcome in certain areas of the city. But the problems weren't necessarily caused by students; they were caused by bad neighbors. City officials wanted to encourage good neighborly behavior and didn't want college students to feel unwelcome in the community. Read more on the ITGA web site. |

1. Syracuse, NY -Educational Sanctions - Does your school offer an educational sanction for students who commit infractions off-campus? Syracuse has a great one and we are looking for other examples.
2. Mansfield, CT - The director of the Department of Building & Housing Inspection for the town of Mansfield Connecticut asks,"Our town is home of the University of Connecticut. Like many similar communities we are struggling with quality of life issues for both student and non-student citizens. One enforcement tool we are exploring is the use of a Tenant Registry to help limit over crowding of dwelling units. Any information you could provide on this topic would be greatly appreciated."
