Colorado State University Participates in Community Welcome FORT COLLINS, CO- CSU's News & Information announced that CSU and Fort Collins will again host the annual Community Welcome, an event that links community members and off-campus Colorado State University students. The event, sponsored by the city of Fort Collins and Colorado State, involves about 100 volunteers representing Fort Collins and CSU Police, city and university staff, and students who will visit more than 2,000 homes near the Colorado State University campus. Teams will fan out in neighborhoods close to campus providing information to residents outlining their responsibilities, including expectations for respecting local codes and ordinances.C ommunity Welcome is a collaborative effort between CSU Off-Campus Life, Vice President for Student Affairs Office, Associated Students of Colorado State University, Fort Collins Neighborhood Services, Fort Collins Police Services and the CSU Police Department.
Town & Gown Can Include More Than Colleges WALLINGFORD, CT - An editorial of the Wordpress Blog of "From Wallingford" describes what began as a road closing request by the private secondary school Choate Rosemary Hall transitioned into much more when brought before the Town Council of Wallingford. Town Gown relations can certainly extend beyond the traditional college and community issues.
University Acts Quickly to Address Park Parking Issue TUSCALOOSA, AL - A report by The Tuscaloosa News tells how the occasional town and gown frictions have grown between the University of Alabama and Tuscaloosa as UA has grown from 20,000 students to 27,000 in less than ten years. Though, one such issue, parking in a recently acquired UA park, was quickly remedied when town and gown worked together.
Mayor and President Promote Student Buying Program and Improved Town & Gown RelationsGREENCASTLE, IN - An editorial in the student newspaper, The DePauw, provides the opinion that the 10,000 residents of Greencastle must not be forgotten when DePauw welcomes 750 new students to the community. Past experiences of forgetting the residents have helped lead DePauw to its No. 9 ranking by the Princeton review for worst town-gown relations. President Brian Casey and Greencastle Mayor Sue Murray have stepped up in backing a new student buying card deal with local restaurants. Both have stressed that improving the relationship between DePauw and Greencastle is a priority and this step shows both sides' dedication to easing the tension.
Olivet College and Community Partnering for Annual 'Night on the Town' OLIVET, MI - An article in The Enquirerreports on the seventh annual "Night on the Town," hosted by Olivet College and the Olivet Community Chamber of Commerce. Olivet College students will have the opportunity to learn more about the services and products offered in the city of Olivet. Olivet's downtown businesses will be participating with coupon giveaways, free samples and prize drawings. The event will also feature live music, a ticket raffle and games. "Night on the Town" is being held in conjunction with the college's Welcome Week. |

Police Reach Out to Students to Warn About Alcohol Dangers The Post and Courier CHARLESTON, SC - According to The Post and Courier, Charleston police have extended their ongoing program of warning young people about the dangers of excessive drinking and wandering around the city into the late night hours by reaching out to work with educators, students, bar owners and others to create a multipronged approach to drinking and the public safety issues it creates. Collaborators include the Mayor of Charleston and President of the College of Charleston. C of C students helped draft recommendations to improve safety on and off campus. And police are working with a group of medical and legal experts who plan to visit schools to discuss the consequences of over-indulging. |

Northern Michigan University Teams with Motorola for Campus-wide WiMAX MARQUETTE, MI - Engadget And Tech News announces that Northern Michigan University is instituting a new campus-wide WiMAX network (a first in the US) with the help of Motorola. The university is also providing some brand new WiMAX-equipped ThinkPads to nearly 3,000 of the school's more than 9,000 students, and it's also making a range of laptop and desktop WiMAX adapters available to students with non WiMAX-enabled computers. |

University of Alabama Joins Other Colleges with Car-sharing Service TUSCALOOSA, AL - The Tuscaloosa News reports that beginning this semester, the University of Alabama will announce plans for a partnership with Zipcar, a for-profit membership based car-sharing service that will let students and faculty leave their cars at home. Zipcar bills itself as the world's leading car-sharing service, with more than 275,000 members and 6,000 vehicles in urban areas and colleges across the U.S. and Europe. Zipcar rents several makes and models of fuel-efficient vehicles to give drivers an alternative and affordable means of transportation. Customers can rent cars by the hour or the day, reserving online, and pick up or drop off cars at several reserved parking spots around campus. |

1. Syracuse, NY -Educational Sanctions - Does your school offer an educational sanction for students who commit infractions off-campus? Syracuse has a great one and we are looking for other examples.
2. Mansfield, CT - The director of the Department of Building & Housing Inspection for the town of Mansfield Connecticut asks,"Our town is home of the University of Connecticut. Like many similar communities we are struggling with quality of life issues for both student and non-student citizens. One enforcement tool we are exploring is the use of a Tenant Registry to help limit over crowding of dwelling units. Any information you could provide on this topic would be greatly appreciated."
