Dorm Development Faces Town Suit ThreatPOUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Poughkeepsie Journal writes that the Town of Poughkeepsie is threatening legal action over a Dutchess Community College dorm unless more public comment is accepted. DCC has proposed a 465 bed dormitory on its campus. College officials have said dorms are needed and would reduce commutes for students living far from campus. They believe the dorm would also provide students with a learning experience more akin to that of a four-year school. Town leaders and residents are worried about increased traffic and increased calls for police and fire service the dorm could bring. |

BUSINESS & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
College Town Populations Rise Faster Than National Average According to Money Show, all across America, college town populations are rising much faster than practically any other real estate market on a national basis. That's because enrollments on a national basis are on a steady rise, and graduate school programs are rapidly expanding as well. With more and more colleges unable to keep up with rising demand in on-campus housing, there's a rush for affordable, off-campus student housing in these college towns.
State College Businesses Brace for Students Return STATE COLLEGE, PA - Centre Daily Times reports on the three-day spending spree when about 14,000 new and returning Penn State students move onto campus and thousands more take up residence off campus. "Ground zero" for students is Wal-Mart, who will bring in 150 to 200 extra sales associates to handle the increase in sales.

The program is a public awareness campaign that is committed to marketing Western State University's importance in the community. The program also offers employer services in its career development center to make Western students and graduates more visible. About 43 percent of Western students work in the community, according to Mr. Gregg, and 33 percent of graduates find employment locally. Western officials often tout their commitment to and countless hours of community service in St. Joseph and its economic impact of well over $100 million annually.

1. Syracuse, NY -Educational Sanctions - Does your school offer an educational sanction for students who commit infractions off-campus? Syracuse has a great one and we are looking for other examples.
2. Mansfield, CT - The director of the Department of Building & Housing Inspection for the town of Mansfield Connecticut asks,"Our town is home of the University of Connecticut. Like many similar communities we are struggling with quality of life issues for both student and non-student citizens. One enforcement tool we are exploring is the use of a Tenant Registry to help limit over crowding of dwelling units. Any information you could provide on this topic would be greatly appreciated."
