Simple Community is a book on how college sports, that often serves as the "front porch" of the university at which the community gathers, is author Rich Luker's ideal link between the people who want to experience community and the companies who have the resources to provide it.

CSU- Fort Collins Expands Party Noise Program to All Residents FORT COLLINS, CO - Today @ Colorado State University announces that the Pilot Party Noise Warning Program will be offered to all residents living within the Fort Collins city limits. The program, which began last April, involved only CSU students who registered their weekend parties at CSU's Off-Campus Life office. The program is now being expanded because of last year's success. According to 9NEWS, if a party is too loud, the host will receive a warning call to break up the party within 20 minutes. If another complaint is received after that time, police will send an officer to the party. If that officer then feels the noise level unreasonable, fines may be given out. With the warning call, the fines would likely be higher than before reaching up to $1,000.
College Leadership Conference Teaches Students There is Life Off-Campus TALLAHASSEE, FL - WCTV2 reports that college students in Tallahassee participated in the college town's First College Leadership Tallahassee program. The idea of the program was to get students from area colleges to think outside the 'college bubble'. The students were able to see the town they're used to in a completely different light by meeting with organizations and officials all around Tallahassee. Temporary Student Refugees Live it up During Annual Homeless Night MADISON, WI - Reporters for The Star Tribune report on Madison's annual night where student leases end at noon Aug. 14 with most new leases starting at noon the next day. For 24 hours, thousands of students here are stranded during Homeless Night. The city's streets held the evidence: Students crashing on couches, sleeping in moving trucks and guarding piles of furniture.
Muncie Police Already On To Underage DrinkingMUNCIE, IN - Police issued citations to 33 people for minor consuming alcohol at a party in Muncie police were tipped off by some concerned parents who wrote them a letter notifying them of recent parties at which underage drinking was taking place. The Star Press quoted Police Sgt. Jay Turner," We got the letter from the parents and we do want to send the message here at the beginning of the school year that this can't go on."
Colleges and Neighbors Seek a New Peace WASHINGTON, DC - The Washington Post writes an article about students of Georgetown, the District and nearby college communities where living off campus frees students from the adult supervision of the dorms, but they quickly learn that their new neighbors have rules, too - and enforcement tactics that have been honed on decades of young neighbors. This year, residents living near Georgetown University plan to hang signs on the doors of student renters, informing them of the rules about garbage collection and noise. On Tuesday, the College Park City Council narrowly voted to continue rent control on single-family houses to help University of Maryland students and others find cheap housing and discourage landlords from buying more houses. And residents of the Brookland neighborhood near Catholic University have pressured police to adopt a zero-tolerance policy for disorderly conduct.
University Implements New Recycling PlanCONWAY, S.C. - TheSunNews writes on a new recycling effort by Coastal Carolina University and Horry County Solid Waste Authority that coordinates more recycling in dorm rooms, at football games and on move-in day. Five tons of cardboard is expected to be collected on move in day alone as the largest class of new students the university has ever enrolled moves into on- and off-campus dorms. |
