ITGA BEGINS SEARCH FOR FT EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 
 
CLEMSON, S.C.- The International Town & Gown Association began its incorporation procedures and organizational structuring in August, 2008. The Association held its first official board meeting on September 8, 2008 formally establishing the ITGA. Now with one year of work completed, the organization has experienced some challenges, but has witnessed a number of triumphs in helping to improve town & gown relations across the US and Canada. Now with an updated business plan in hand, the ITGA begins its search for a permanent Executive Director by posting an employment ad on its web site and in two national journals. READ MORE

School Launches Alcohol Responsibility Initiative  
CONWAY, SC - SCNow reports on a new campus initiative from officials at Coastal Carolina University that encourages students to make responsible decisions when it comes to alcohol use. GRAND RAPIDS, MI - According to MLive.com, the Grand Rapids Community College is putting some implementing a campus smoking ban and fining offenders up to $30 if they persistently puff.

The CollegeRecruiter.com Blog writes that spending in most back-to-school categories, from elementary to college, is expected to decrease, with one bright spot: electronics. With personal laptops and desktop computers increasingly affordable for most families, spending on electronics and computer equipment is expected to increase 11 percent.

Mayor Supports Rent Stabilization in College Town
COLLEGE PARK, MD - The DiamondBack Student Newspaper writes that the Mayor College Park cast the deciding vote of an extension of the city's rent control ordinance. The highly contentious ordinance is despised by landlords, who said it discriminates against students and unfairly exempts apartment buildings. The ordinance caps rent for single-family homes at $2,187 a month or at 0.6 percent of the property's assessed value in July 2007, whichever is the greater amount.

Gainesville, FL is researching "soft" bar closings. Bars stop serving alcohol at a certain time, then stays open without alcohol for a period of time. Gainesville PD is looking for communities that have these regulations, pros/cons, town gown issues, police, & business impacts etc.
