The Wildcat Welcome will include more than 40 on- and off- campus events hosted by the UA and Tucson communities. Living in a College Bubble CHAPEL HILL, NC - An editorial in the Chapel Hill News describes going to school and living in this college town is like living in an unnatural bubble insulating students and faculty from the "outside world". The UNC student government is working to burst this bubble by adding two student seats to the Downtown Partnership's board of directors and continuing the Good Neighbor Initiative this fall, where the school works with town officials to integrate students living off-campus into town communities.
Town v. Gown Argument MINNEAPOLIS - ST.PAUL, MN - The Minnesota Daily news offers an editorial the "town and gown academic argument" as a response to a previously written letter to the editor, "a call to halt rowdy behavior!". Student Housing Zoning Causes Controversy Between City of Syracuse against Onondaga County
Syracuse, NY -- The Post Standard reports that a disagreement over the enforcement of zoning in Syracuse University neighborhoods has led to a controversial disagreement between Syracuse and Onondaga County officials. The county shocked city officials July 22 when it directed the person in charge of day-to-day city zoning issues to stop enforcing a city law. The 2007 law, which was voided in state Supreme Court in January, required new rental properties near Syracuse University to have one parking space per bedroom. The county says it wasn't trying to undermine the city's authority. It only meant to avoid any lawsuit against the county. | |
BUSINESS, BUDGET AND ECONOMY
LSU Athletics & Administration Partner to Cut Budgets BATON ROUGE, LA - According to the Advocate news, LSU eliminated the position of University vice chancellor of communications and university relations position and is replacing the position with the Senior Associate Athletic Director. He will now be in charge of communications and university relations for all of LSU's flagship campus, not just sports. LSU Chancellor Martin wants the athletic department, which is giving more money back to the university than before, to reflect more of the "student" side in the emphasis on "student athletes."
Summer Break Causes College Town Jobless rates to Rise WASHINGTON, DC - The USA Today issued a report on the nation's unemployment rate increase in college towns and larger metropolitan areas. Unemployment rates rose from May to June in 348 of more than 370 metro areas, according to an Associated Press analysis of Labor Department data released Wednesday. Some of the biggest increases hit college towns, where the annual summertime exodus of students causes bars, restaurants and other businesses to cut staff. Tuscaloosa, Ala., home to the University of Alabama, suffered the biggest monthly increase in unemployment from May to June. Its jobless rate jumped to 12.5% in June, up 3.8 percentage points. Alexandria, La., saw its unemployment rate rise 7.5%. And the jobless rate in College Station-Bryan, Texas, home to Texas A&M, rose to 6.5%.
The Cost of Tailgating? ATLANTA, GA - The Junkyard Blawg of the Atlanta Journal Constitution discusses a recent proposal in Auburn, AL to charge for tailgating access to a new campus green space adjacent to Jordan-Hare Stadium. A private company working with Auburn University will charge from $222 per game ($1,775 total) to $535 per game ($4,275 total) for the full season for what an Auburn official called a "stress-free" tailgating experience in which tents, tables and chairs are set up and taken down for you. Tailgating for individual games is available for $300 to $1,250. Alabama began charging for some tailgating spots last season and Auburn says similar programs are in place at other SEC schools, including Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
