Aftermath of Professor's Arrest Highlight Tensions in College Town CAMBRIDGE, MA - The College News provides insight on the recent arrest and subsequent dismissal of charges, of a Harvard professor by local police officers. The incident has created national uproar, culminating in a condemnation of the officer's conduct by President Barack Obama. The arrest has prompted discussion in the media and on the Internet over whether or not the Cambridge police overstepped their bounds. Discussions centering on the arrest include police actions, suspect reactions, racial influence and town-gown relation influence.
City Councillor Directs Issues to Students and Neighbors Peterborough, Ontario, Canada - The Examiner News reports on a City of Peterborough elected councilor calling on neighbors to let him know which student rental properties do or could cause problems. Problems mentioned are parking, blocking of streets, excessive noise and parties and home and yard care. Peterborough is home to Fleming College. The Councillor sent a letter to residents who live around Fleming College to let them know he feels the city, college and police need "an action plan" to deal with off-campus student housing issues.
WVU Experts Discuss College Town Economic SuccessMORGATOWN, WV - WVU Today sent out a press release quoting recent reports by Forbes Magazine ranking Morgantown as the No. 2 college town in the nation for jobs. The report describes college towns' ability to provide economic stability while many towns are experiencing negative economic conditions. West Virginia University is offering expert advice on this college town success and its role in a statewide economy. |

College Town Approves Downtown Visual Arts Center for University
HANOVER, MA - The Dartmouth reports that the Town of Hanover has approved a design for a Dartmouth Visual Arts center to be located in the downtown area. Though the project has been a controversial issue between citizens and the University, the Hanover Planning Board decided that the building and use did meet the town long term design goals for the downtown area. In addition, the project may bring needed infrastructure improvements to the downtown including underground utility lines .
City Creates a University Business District to Connect Town to College
MEMPHIS, TN - The Daily News of Memphis writes that the City of Memphis, after working several years on a master plan, has approved a redevelopment plan and a zoning overlay to take advantage of a public-private venture to connect the city with Rhodes College, Christian Brothers University and the University of Memphis. The plan is to make the street and sidewalks busier with more foot traffic from the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods and creating new living communities. | |

Federal Agency Grants$10 million in for Emergency Management Planning Campus Technology announces that the United States Department of Education has awarded grants worth $9.7 million to 26 colleges and universities to develop and strengthen their emergency management plans and to promote off-campus collaboration. Grants are to ensure that campuses have the resources to develop comprehensive emergency plans that involve the community. Projects must address all four phases of emergency management: prevention mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. |

Gainesville, FL is researching "soft" bar closings. Bars stop serving alcohol at a certain time, then stays open without alcohol for a period of time. Gainesville PD is looking for communities that have these regulations, pros/cons, town gown issues, police, & business impacts etc.
